I have just I stalled Tiscali on another Pc and at the bottom of the monitor there is an icon showing two monitors with a red cross over them. The message says,
Local area connection A network cable is unplugged. Can anyone tell me what this means and how I rectify this.
Thanks

Hi dj,
It usually means you have no network connection or a network cable is unplugged.

Regards

Peter

OK dj,
Then I assume you have a wireless broadband connection?
If you do then the icons will refer to a internal network card that you are not using.

Hope this helps

Peter

Hello. You can hide the icon or remove it as follows: CONTROL PANEL/NETWORK CONNECTIONS/SELECT NETWORK ON RIGHT/CLICK 'Change settings of this connection.' ON LEFT. UNTICK 'Show icon......'.. That's in Xp. You'll find similar in Vista I'm sure, but with a more devious route probably! Charlie

Thanks peter, no I don't have a wireless connection.
Charlie thanks for telling me how to get rid of it. But before I do can you tell what the message means and is it ok to get rid of it without taking any action ?
Thanks

Hello. All it means is, that Windows has detected that you have a network card, and that there is nothing plugged into it. If you have broadband, it must be plugged in with a USB plug. If you have dialup, it has its own monitor icon.
