A couple of months ago I bought a Focus Estate (2001).
It has turned out to be a mistake. Its very uncomfortable. It jars over every bump and the steering seems twitchy too.
Also it seems very low geared for a 2 litre engine. I often don't bother with first gear.
I know I should have noticed all this during the test drive but ...
I can't believe all Focuses are like this. Anyone any idea why mine is so bad ?
Thanks

cannot comment on the gearing i have a focus 1800 tdci 03 estate the rear does seem a bit hard on the suspention when unloaded, but the steering is fine, focus's are heavier on the steering than most cars with power steering i find
have you made sure the tyre pressures are correct and there is no damage to them?

Tyres are undamaged and pressures are correct but having thought about it, I am wondering if I have the right sort of tyres. They are 205/50R16. There does not seem much rubber under the wheel !

mayby it needs agood flush and service. have you checked suspension is standard. Focus are supposed to be good for 200k although 125k mark is when parts start need renewing from what I know. Tyres might be a little low profile. Go to a tyre web site and enter your reg no. it will tell you the car and correct tyres sizes.

generally speaking, the lower the profile, the harder the ride will be, as the side-walls of the tyres will be more rigid.
Also, the size of the tyres will have an effect on the gearing to some extent.
For example, if the width is correct, but the profile is much lower than standard, the overall gearing will be lower too.
therefore, check what tyres are supposed to be on it, and if they are wrong, changing them could cure both of your problems at the same time.
