as in the past you have been a great help i thought i'd pick your brains again!
i took my escort for the dreaded mot last night and it only failed on emissions.
the co was too high, which is what it failed on last year meaning i had to have a new cat surely it cant need replacing already????? i have been told it may need a lambda sensor, again replaced last year but as the garage i use doesnt have a emissions tester they say they will replace bits and its a trip back and forward to the mot station until they hit upon the right result, any suggestions to get the emissions down or is it really a case of trial and error??
escort 96 1.6 zetec engine if tat helps???
thanks in advance
deb

hi deb's, i'm only thinking aloud here, so dont shoot me down just yet, but if you had these bits replaced last year, I'm assuming that you got a 12 month warranty against failure, so if the mot testing station say's one of the parts fitted last time needs changing, the garage that fitted that item should replace it free of charge, assuming that its not more than 12 months since they were fitted,

as said go back to who fitted the parts and get them to check. A cat should come with 3 year 36000 mile warrenty. Sometimes it can be a simple thing like dirty airfilter. a dodgey lead or plug or cylinda. all these can be checked for with out must expense an in under 1/2 hr if a fault is found their then one of these could have killed your lumbard sensor and sooted up the cat. check for missfire low compression and remove air filter. The plugs should be examined whilst out as the to can highlight problem. if filter is not in really good condition for a few pounds replace it. Then take the car for a really good drive running in higher revs. dont have to speed just leave it in 3rd on a 70mph road for a mile. then take it back and get it tested. Then look at the lumbard sensor, if it fails

so far changed the plugs, leads, air filter, lambda sensor and the cat and yet the co2 reading is still 2.218 instead of being under 0.3
anyone have any more suggestions??
thanx

Hmmm.. I'm encountering this problem more and more with some of these aftermarket catylysts and after looking at most of them they are usually about half the surface area and half the density of the originals and in my opinion some of these are of poor quality indeed.
Just to be clear here though.. you state co2, are you sure it's not just C.O. ?
Two different reading meaning two different things.
I assume you got a printout with your mot, does it have a reading called "lambda" on it and if so exactly what number does it show when the engine is at idle and cruise(cruise is usually somwhere between 2500 to 3000rpm) ?
If the lambda reading is pretty much at 1.00 or damn close then the sensor is probably ok.

sorry my mistake its the c.o thats high.
the other readings all passed, the lambda reading is 1.029,
had the new cat a year ago, and then replaced on monday as the garage assured me it was faulty had the lambda replaced at the same time,

That lambda reading is actually showing a a bit of a lean-ish mixture but not desperate.
Is that reading at idle or cruise ? this is important !

the test was done at fast idle 3016 rpm.
since changing the cat and te lambda sensor the car has started to misfire under acceleration, am now thinking its time for the scrap yard as i seem to just be throwing money at it now, shame as until then although old it was a lovelly car :-(
