Hi Annie

You will really enjoy kenya and the Safaris. We stayed in Mombassa in one of the lovely beach resort hotels, and did one main safari and one elephant safari in April 2003. It was such a great experience - I felt as if I was in Born Free or Out of Africa!! It was wonderful to be out in the wild under the camp fire with roaming animals in the distance.

On the downside the poverty is just awful, and children run bare foot after all the tour buses wanting sweets and pens etc, so take a supply if you can. We visited an orphanage and we were given a tour around. This particular one was set up by a couple for physically and sexually abused children. Some of the stories were horrendous. At the time here were not enough beds and some had to sleep on the floor, but at least they were safe there. They relied on visitors like us passing by and giving donations. Unfortunately, if people send things from the UK they do not always get to them due to the corrupt Government in Kenya.

The people have so very little and some families have lost so many members due to disease. As we were all inclusive, I used to get several burgers and chips at the poolside bar and feed the Kenyan workers in the hotel grounds, who used to have to hide to eat it.

When you step onto the beach, you will be immediately `surrounded' by local people selling their wares. This can be a bit annoying if you just want a nice relaxing walk on the beach, but you can learn a lot from them, and they are just trying to earn a crust.

Take plenty of immodium - it''s all part and parcel, and make sure you have all the innoculations and malaria tablets!!

Enjoy!

Linda
