I live in the UK and saw an 06 Ford Focus 1.6 (115 bhp) LX with 30 000 miles at my local Ford dealer. The asking price was £6499. As my budget is £5000 plus my 1999 T reg Ford Focus they said that they would give me £1200 for my old car which would reduce the price to £5299. I then managed to get the price down to exactly £5000.

However I do have doubts about something. The car has had 1 lady owner and when I asked the sales man about service history he said that it had been serviced in 07 and in 09. It appears at this stage that the car did not undergo any service last year (in 08) so you can't really say it has a "full service history."

I am worried about parting with my money with this knowledge as oil and filter changes are so important.

What should I do ?

My advice would be, if you have any doubts, don't buy it.
There are lots of cars for sale at the moment, so it should be easy to find what you want.

Some of these cars have that expensive longlife oil nowadays and can go for 20,000 miles easily enough.
However Focus's are ten a penny and if your not happy about something just walk away, you will easly manage to pick up a Focus elsewhere no problem.
I personally feel that £5G is a lot of your hard earned money and whether your right or wrong about the servicing doesnt matter really it's all about what you feel comfortable with and if your gut says "not happy" then that's the end of it.

i thought the whole point of buying from a main dealer was peace of mind, because they guarantee the quality, mileage, 1 or 2 owner, the whole 9 yards, that's why they charge a premium, but they are not the only source for quality cars,
where do many dealers buy quality 2 -4 year old stock, at well known car auctions, ex-manufacturer demo's, ex- mobility contract cars, my local BCA had 50+ bmw's all 06, 56, 07, 57 reg everything from Z4 to the 740 all with warranted mileage/service history, loads of fords and vauxhalls too, mainly mid range stuff all with wm/sh, but if your saving the dealers mark-up, that £1000+ is in your pocket, and many auction houses now offer warranty at minimal cost

the other route is car supermarkets, they are a bit pushy for you to buy on finance, but i think in this climate they will bite your hand off

but do your research, check out "auto trader" online, but at the end of the day, it's down to your gut feeling, what are you happy with,

tommy
