Hi all, I've got a crack in my windscreen, it's at the bottom on the passenger side about 7 inches long, I'm pretty sure it's an mot failure but thought id see what you guys think, if so, can garages fit 2nd hand screens if i got 1 from breakers, or would i have to go to autoglass or somewhere like that, I need to do it as cheaply as poss, credit crunch has hit me in the nuts, thanks.

hi, im gonna ask a stupid question, what car are you talking about, and do you know if its one of the bonded/glued types, these need special tools, or a very sharp knife/cutter/blade to remove it,
why dont you ask the tester at a mot station that you will use, about whether it will fail the mot with the crack,

tommy

a crack screen equels a structaully unsound vehicle and I would expect it to fail. As tommy says what car ? next up do you have glass cover on insurance. normally £60 or £70 it does not affect your no claims

I'm only covered 3rd party fire and theft and don't have windscreen cover unfortunatly, im pretty sure it's the bonded screen, its a 96 escort, i was going to call an autoglass specialist but someone told me they usualy charge in excess of 300 quid so i quickly changed my mind, a stray stone from an oncoming vehicle gave me all this grief the day after i bought the car, believe me i was pretty gutted as i know the windscreen is 1 of the most awkward jobs 2 do, or i would have done it myself.

no need to panic just yet, a quick google search and i found this

http://www.pic-upspares.co.uk/windscreens.htm

so they do exist

or do your own search for your area on the Internet, on bt.com or yell.com for used windscreens or windscreen fitters

hellooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Your windscreen should pass the mot, if the crack is on the passenger side, aslong as it's not blocking the drivers line of vision.
It should pass

I have a 1997 ford escort, 1.8, 3 door hatchback, i got new screen bout 3yrs ago, cost me 90quid including fittin it.
some company no ones heard of, can't remember there name but im sure you'll find one.

Make sure you have checked out the car before mot, what i do is i go down to a garage and ask for an mot prep, preparing it for mot yeah, so basically they look at it and charge me a tenner, basically they will say whats wrong with it and what needs doing, buying there knowledge, then you know what you gotta do, its cheaper than a retest fee.

Also you can take your car down your local council and they will mot it for you but you have to make an appointment first, this is good because the council men are not on bonus or trying to make money, they just doing there job, so its not very likely you will get done up like a kipper lol
