Xsara 1.4 whirring / grating noise. Transmission?

I have a 2000 X-plate Citroen Xsara Forte 1.4 which I've had for about 2 1/2 years and has done 79k miles. This morning I started it up, into 1st, everything fine until I engaged 2nd. There was then quite a loud bang and at first I feard I'd lost the gearbox! Back into 1st, no problem Anyway, as I began driving I noticed a whirring / grating sound when coming off the accelerator pedal and coasting. When depressing the clutch or putting the car in neutral, the noise lessens greatly but is still present. When slowing down to a pedestrian speed with the clutch depressed, a faint ticking or knocking can be heard which gradually slows down with the speed of the wheels. No noise can be heard at standstill regardless of clutch depression etc. It's also worth pointing out this noise presents itself in any gear and at any speed, although as stated above, there is no noise present at standstill or indeed when pulling away Does anybody have any ideas on this? A mechanic has taken a look and agrees it is very odd but can't find a fault with it.
