I have a 2006/56 Ford Ka to sell and I was wondering how the second hand car market is at the moment with the recession, and what is the best way to sell it?

its a bit difficult for sellers and buyers i think, even with a fav like the ka, out of interest i had a quick look on the auto trader website, and looked for ka's between £3000 - 6000 with-in 40 miles of where i am, and it came up with 127, ranging from a 2006 06 28k miles £3750, to a delivery mileage 2008 08 15 miles at £5495 both at dealers, anyone selling at the moment might be better off selling it privately, if you can afford too, genuine people will always want the genuine cars, but most want something for nothing

but it also depends on if you have a really nice car, or a heap that your trying to get rid off, knowing what you know about your car, would you buy it
after reading about many sob stories about people going to collect cars that they have bought on ebay, only to find its nothing like the pristine car that had been described

but good luck and happy car hunting

Thanks. It's all a bit confusing! I've got a Oct 06 Ka that is in very good condition (30k) so I'm hoping that even at rock bottom price I'll get over £2,500 for it. And yes, I'd buy it but I am buying a new vehicle.

Helpful advice about Ebay though - it must be difficult for people selling and buying from Ebay. I looked at Ka's on there and there weren't many sold but it's hard to tell because there were a lot of "classified ads".

Local garage offered to buy it for £2,600 cash, so if I can't sell it there is that option as a back up but when I looked at private sales they were being sold for much more so I reckon the garage would be making a mark up.

hello again,

take a look here http://www.bestcarbuyer.co.uk/ and see what they say your car is worth

ebay is ok, some people hate it, when ive been looking at cars after people at work have asked me about what price they go for, but that's a difficult one to answer, i listened to someone from ebay on tv the other week talking about the uprising in sales since the downturn in the economy, and he said that seller get a better price if the item ends on a Thursday evening or a Sunday lunch time, it must be because they can or hope to collect it over the weekend, or more people tend to go online on a Sunday,
if you are thinking about ebay, watch as many cars as similar to yours as you can, with more and less miles, and see what the average price is, if your happy, and fancy a go, put the reserve price at the average, the more pictures the better, be as honest as you can,

the other point about ebay, is that when your selling something that people may want to view before bidding, make sure you have someone with you when the viewing take's place,
if they are test driving a car, ask them to bring proof of id and insurance,

I have a friend that works at a car auction and he says second hand car prices are inflated by non-trade buyers coming in and pushing prices up because they think the market is low !

car auctions are ok if your desperate to sell, or your a motor trader, i sold a 12 year old vectra recently, ok it was a bag of spanners that had done a few miles, id bought and then found out it was worse than i thought lol, but by the time i had paid the entrance fee, selling fee, this, that and the other fee, i ended up with £60, very again
its the same when you buy, you spot a reasonable banger that's worth buying, you buy it for £75 - £100 you go to pay for it, and the auction house says about the minimum buyers premium of £70 on top, rip off Britain strikes again

where i live we have one of the major players, basically anybody wanting to start trading cars has got no chance if buying or selling at auction and making any money at all

Its best to try and target 3 year old motors at an auction.

These are normally company motors that are disposed of after 3 years no matter the condition.

Some really good bargains can be had.

Wouldn't buy a banger at an auction.
