Im looking for advice on my 96 Rover 416. Having had the headgasket go I recently have had work done on my rover. This included new head with bolts, new radiator and new engine manifold(with of course oil and filter change). On the way home from having it repaired the engine cut out twice when I slowed down(coming up to junctions and similar). This meant engine totally dying and battery as well as oil pressure light coming up on the dashboard(as if you had just put the key in turning it before turning the engine over). At the time I called the mechanic to which he replied it may be the car clearing the system and not to worry unless it keeps occuring. The car has since been driven for a few days. On some days I drive a good ammount of miles and nothing happens however on two other occasions since then(including this morning) the car has cut when I slow. If however I slow down, stop and restart the engine it runs without issues. The only other thing I have noticed is that the car is having more difficult than usual starting since this work was done as well(turns over a few times before kicking into life sometimes needs a touch on the accelerator). I have recently changed all the spark leads on the car as well as the lead from the cap to the coil as well(due to previous running issues that have been resolved). The car as well has recently had its MOT done(resulting in a new backbox and cat). The problems however started before this MOT or the work for the MOT was carried out. Also on one occasion I put the clutch in when the car was cutting out(felt the power going)and the engine kept running. The actual timing between the power dropping and the engine cutting is about a second. No noises from the car and when running and driving around works like a dream. Any ideas what it might be? Could it just be that my car is clearing out all the rubbish from when the headgasket went?P.s. on some advice was told it may be the idle speed control valve? Had my father in law(who is good with cars) have a look and he has cleaned it. Still problems however.

If the garage has done the job right, there shouldn't be anything that needs "clearing out." It could be an air leak, or a loose/split disconnected hose somewhere. I would be inclined to give the car back to the garage ASAP and get them to put it right.

have the garage check the ecu for fault codes, if it is a sensor then it should be logged. Most prob. a vac leak or a clogged maf sensor . Get them to spray some carb cleaner into the maf, it is at the end of the vac pipe in the ecu. Only other thing may be a break in the engine loom, you need to do a lot of jiggle testing to find this one.
