Hi, basically when i start the car from cold it is great, when the car is warm and been turned off and then crank over there is a loud clatter from drivers side of the engine,no other times does the engine make this noise, i have 2 suggestions, 1 being fan belt tensioner the other is the dmf on it's way out..anybody got any input on this please, greatly appreciated......thanks

if it sounds like a bag of spanners being shaken its likely to be DMF can you feel any virbation when you depress the clutch if so dmf if you fancy removing the starter and theres loads of metal debris dmf

as for noises in metal housings they can travel and sound in different places as for a solid flywheel theres some differing views on if it will damage the gearbox personaly i think its how you drive and change gear
i have no connection with this firm but have dealt with then on quite a few different times they are good

thanks for the link, have actually been looking at those,i reckon it will be the way to go due to uncertainty of dmf life,i know what you say about metal sounds but this is deffo on drivers side, that is what is making me uncertain as i read on another site about problems with the fan belt tensioner and how it can have a metal on metal sound when it's knackered, reckon i will take off plastic wing trim and check out that first,if not that then i will have to budget for dmf, clutch etc, know someone who can do it so the crazy amounts some people stste should be reduced.......

woody, i have personally been caught out by one of these engines and yes it clattered something terrible we fitted a new dual mass flywheel only to find out it was actually the starter motor not turning the engine fast enough worth considering i think. once the engine had started there was no noise and it drove fine does yours drive ok if so i would try a doner starter motor if poss cos they are about £100 i think hope this helps a little

thanks for your input, worth looking into, deffo gonna get wheel off and take a look whats going on when crankin over, just baffling coz first start of the day it's spot on with no noise. no noise at all when driving which is also why i doubted dmf. will keep informed....thanks

in fact ford recon that it is a faulty/slow starter that causes the dmf to fail on most occasions
