I also just bought a Dejon 14 and no nothing about boats. I'm going on a RYA level 2 course next week as reccommended by someone. The course costs about £220 for two days. There is an article in this months Sea Angler on pages 114 to 115 that is worth reading. Regards

If you know nothing about boats - or this one in particular - then tread very carefully. I would think twice about going to sea in a 14ft boat in the first place. I sail in the Firth of Clyde with a 26ft sailboat and it gets pretty hairy at times! If you must go out, take it in stages and, until you get more experience, stay close to shore. If you know nothing about boats, then the only piece of advice I could give you would be to never go out when offshore winds are forecast. Also, get on the saiing course already advised! I did it, and sailing dingies is great fun - although I was in the water as much as I was in the boat!!! Take great care anyway as the saying " cruel sea " can be VERY true!

Thank you for your advice I will take it on board and take it very slowly. I did the Level 2 RYA powerboat course last week. It was a great course and covered a great deal. However, I intend to take it slowly and stay close to shore like you suggest. Paul
