hi guys, yes youve guessed it, the mondy had conked out, i thought it was the battery, as the starter was clicking, but when the recovery guy arrived he did a few checks and said its your alternator, so he jump started it for me, as the battery has gone flat due to the alternator, i managed to get home ok, but i did notice that the rev counter, speedo, electric windows arnt working, the fuel gauge is at 1/2 tank, even though i know it has less in, and what i think is the airbag or abs light is on (far left light at the bottom) and the car was cutting out for 1 second every 15-20 seconds as i drove the 2 miles home

as i suspect its the alternator, but money is a bit tight, and as the recovery guy said they are about £180 not sure if that's +vat or including fitting, ive fitted them before, many years a go, but not recently, so no idea if its an easy job, what i have to remove or just undo and push out of the way

if i buy a second hand alternator, are all mk2 2-litre zetec engined alterntors the same, as i have a 2000 w reg

IS YOURS THE 130BHP ?. as think they are basically the same silver and black tops.
Tommy I d say check battery cells, earths and other leads and connectors from battery and alternator. Charge Battery, Test battery leave 2hrs test again, leave 22hrs and test again. If holds charge great if doesnt recharge and disconnet follow the above again. If it doesnt discharge test the alternator/battery with engine running.
If the alenator is not chargeing run a fused live wire to alternator activator (if has one) and then test. I mention this because my GF was not telling the alternator to charge. post back results

hi bas, the breakdown guy tested the charge rate i think, he said something about it should be 14+ but on the tester i could see showed 10.4, the battery is on charge as i write, but if its the battery, why has the rev counter, speedo and the other things stopped working,
i also noticed that before i disconected the battery, the battery light on the dash did not come on when i turn the ignition on, but the oil and brake light did

It could posibly be the led in the dash on some cars this prevents charging as it breaks the circuit once battery is charged this should come on. if it does not then the ecu may not be telling it to which is what the GF car did or the bulb could be blown. I would also check fuses as on the escort when a fuse blows for the fuel tank they read half full.

u can buy a little tester, that tells you if the alternator or battery is disfunctional, bout 5quid.
If you got a bit of time, take the alternator off, have a look at the brushes, yrs ago brushes used to wear on alternators.
200quid for an alternator? is that from main dealer?

£180 was the price the recovery guy said, but it's all fixed now, i didn't have a torx socket set so i couldn't take the tensioner off, so i visited a local garage for a quote, new unipart battery, remove and refit alternator, get alternator repaired, they did the job for £110 all-in

is that a fair price

who knows, but when i took the car in the dash charge light didn't come on, either when first turning the ignition on or when engine running, but now working as it should, well i didnt like the price halfords wanted, ie £75 - £82, a local independant part stort wanted £42, and the guy that repairs alternators wanted £47 for a battery

decent batteries are ok if you have a nice motor, and it shows that a car has been maintained to a standard, it would put me off if i went to look at a quality motor and it had a fastfit battery, a quality motor needs a quality battery,

i knew without checking that a motorcraft battery was going to be expensive
