How few electrics can I get away with for my Pug 405 Diesel to start & run?

Having successfully removed (largely to see if I could do it) a heater matrix from a scrapper, I'm gonna be fitting it in mine next week

A bit of googling suggests that these things can be a pig to get to successfully seal, even with new O rings; and I was hoping I could safely start & run the car to operating temperature with dashboard out to ensure everythings water tight prior to re-assembly.

I don't understand what actually happens when I turn the key; ie what gadgrety's involved in arming the fuel cut off switch and getting power to the starter motor ???

I'm also not sure if i could do any harm, for instance to the alternator; by running it a while in this fashion ???

The car's reliable and I don't see a problem not having instruments for this period of time.

My GLD (near to base model I think) doesn't have alarm or immobiliser; though it does have rev counter.

PS. Any tips for getting the speedo cable back into the back of the instrument, am anticipating fun, games and much swearing with this bit???

PPS. I take it the Valeo and Brevett matrices aren't interchangeable; as luck would have it the secondhand one I have clearly isn't very old, presumably failed on scrapper some time recent-ish. Worst come to worst will be up for grabs if at cost of postage if anyone can use it.

Keep em crossed for me that I find my matrix is a Brevett, as I've got, rather than Valeo
