saxo 1.5 diesel,is it inj pump sensor problem

pump sensor problem i think problem started month or so ago with severe loss of power and black smoke all time,i changed fuel filter and air filter and it made no differnce. tried injector cleaner as well, one called 40,which was just a waste of money like most off thes things that are sepose to work wonders. the pump on this saxo seems same to me is the one on the old ax,apart from they fitted a electronic sensor in between where the 4 injector pipes come out, i have been told they have failed somtimes. so i decided to unplug it and see if it would make any differnce, the car started up fine with it unpluged no black smoke think it just slightly down on power, plug it back in and it runs rubbish again, when it is unpluged it shows a light on dash with pump symble, there is only 2 wires on this censor so it cant be doing too many things, thought of replacing it but not cheap ,175 quid on ebay and they say they are twice that much at cytroen dealers, lot money if it dont fix problem. so i thought see if anyone on here might know what problem could be, trying to avoid paying garage 70 or 80 quid to tell me i need new sensor that will cost another few hundred. b greatful for any help on matter joe
