i have a vw polo that is over heating(1996)is it worth fixing . thats 2 cars i have had this year with the same problem. how does this happen
age or driver(good driver). the polo is due for a m.o.t and tax next month. thinking of putting it through a MOT before dealing with the heat problem

Right in this order, check that fan kicks in when car up to running h temp, if not by pass the wiring to the fan stays on permanently.

If the fan does kick in, replace the thermostat and see if the over heating continues as the thermostat can be seized shut.

Cant see it being a blockage, unless the water pump has failed.

Check all coolant hoses, are they all hot once the car is up to running temp, if some are still cold then will be either thermostat or water pump.

If the pump has gone and its been being driven then yes chances are the head may well have warped cracked and head gasket will need replaceing. My pumps just gone on mine and I will not even turn it over.
Get a price and then make a decission. They may hget away with skimming the head ?
What sounds like has happened is the valvs gone inturn this has killed the pump continued driveing at this point kills the head and or head gasket.

hi

did the garage give you a price for the valve and pump ?

you could also try ringing around mobile mechanics (see your yellow pages) and ask one of them to take a look and give a price, they could also look the car over and tell you if with the MOT coming up if anything else may need doing, and you can then weigh up your options.

Not done much with water cooled VW's but water pumps arn't normally to dear its the labour if you cant do it yourself that pushes up the costs.
