Give the whole cooling system a good flush through and just hope thats its a bit of dislodged sludge partially causing a blockage.
If that doesn't cure it then check the head has resealed probably.
They are a wet liner engine and you can easily damage a seal when the head is removed.

Hi tom

Air is getting in somewhere for sure as you say after bleeding, the hot hoses start to go cold. Is the coolant level getting low, Has the liner gaskets been disturbed when taking off the head? Try running without the thermostat or run engine with expansion cap unscrewed. Fresh anti-freeze has a searching action it will find leaks, look for coolant stains.

Hope this helps

Tom, If the head has been off or the coolant drained then air enters the cooling system and prevents circulation (air locks). Bleed the air out of the system using the small bleed tap which is screwed to the offside of the heater air intake under the bonnet. Top up the coolant and run engine. You may have to bleed it a couple of times, that should cure it

hi thanks for the quick responce,i have bled this system now cold and hot,the heaters run hot and everything seems to be ok,fan cuts in and the temp drops, though when it is driven the heaters go cold and it starts to warm up to 3/4, if you do 55,when you hit a hill or any kind of load the engine is under the temp continues to rise to red,the fan cant keep up with the work,a few responces now have suggested the liner seals, when the head was removed there was a lot of cleaning of the surfaces of the block and liners with wet and dry paper,do you think this would be enough to disturb them, any more advise would be much appreciated guys, thanks a lot for the quick responce, tom.

For what its worth my opinion is that you certainly have an air leak into the coolant jacket of either the head or the block. V.Unfortunate but you'll have to have it off and put new seals in. Did you have the head skimmed? if not do so (about £40 I think). I've changed the coolant a few times in mine and one bleed is sufficient from my exp. Wet liner engines are a pain in respect of their seals but have advantages in other ways.

An internal leak will not show externally obvioulsy, but your water level should drop, albeit this may be very gradual.

If you are desperate you could try a block sealer (not a radiator sealer). I used K-Seal in a Sierra DOHC with a leaking head gasket for a couple of years (replacing it regularly). It didn't stop the air locks entirely but reduced them. This should only be a temporary measure though. The reason I dodn't fix the Sierra properly was the cost of parts were more than it was worth!

Best wishes, Steve
