Ford escort 1.8si p-reg 1997, 16v zetec engine

I have noticed that when i turn the blower on inside the car, i get like a burning smell come through into the inside of the car, it sort of smells like water boiling but im not losing water and temperature gauge is working fine, i still get this burning smell though, it comes and goes. But I don't think it is anything to do with the water. I have checked all round the engine and I can't see anything visible that would be wrong. Does anybody have any ideas of what this could be? Many thanks
