My 1997 Synergie 1.9TDi has problems starting (the vehicle has done 180,000 miles). Battery and glow plugs are ok and power is getting to glow plugs. I can see air in the fuel line from the fuel filter to the injector pump and this seems to be the cause of poor starting. Before turning over I have to prime the fuel line (upto a dozen pumps) - I can see the air being being pushed into the injector pump followed by fuel. I engine then starts after a few turnovers and fires up. If I don't prime then I have to turn engine over many, many times until it splutters before firing up - lots of white smoke. Air does not get in the fuel line before the fuel filter and there are no splits or loose joints in the fuel line. How is air getting into the fuel line?

I hope someone can help with an explanation.

Many thanks.

hi

if air is getting in then there is a very small leak somewhere.

Suggest you re-check the filter lid and seal, and change the pipe from filter to pump
(pipe is cheap only a few £ per foot) and replace the clips too.

Dont keep turning the engine without priming, the pump is not designed to pump air, and infact uses the fuel as a coolant, so you can over heat it and cause damage, and the pumps are EXPENCIVE to replace.

Al

Hi Al
I promised to let you know how I went on, Well I tightened up a few circlips on the fuel line and it did improve starting. As my vehicle was due for an MOT I asked the garage to check it out. They found a small hole in the primer bulb and replaced it. They also replaced the one-way fuel line valve which was also faulty.
Many thanks.
