At what milage intervals should the engine inlet/exhaust valves be adjusted in a diesel engine? My vehicle has done 180,000 miles and sometimes the engine emits whitish smoke from the exhaust at startup which, so I am told, is due to incorrect valve clearances - I can't recall ever having the valve clearances adjusted. I believe in the Citroen 1.9TDi shims are used for valve adjustment but as the area is confined beneath the bonnet it looks like it could be a garage job.
