hi, my son used to get migraines when he was at primary, the school sent him home once as they thought he had meningitus! (spelling wrong there) We do have a history of migraines, husband is a bad sufferer, but my daughter had 'unwell' feelings from about 9/10 until she started her periods a couple of years later, the 'unwellness' was as regular as clockwork, every three weeks and yet she was fine within a day or so, (her cycle now is 28 days) might be worth a check up from the doctor, she is heading in puberty at 9 ish, either that or something in her diet might be affecting her, like chocolate, dairy products etc., Good luck and i hope she gets over them soon, I have only ever had one migraine in my whole life and they are awful.

I suffered like this as a child Luckily I grew out of it. I still get migraines but normally only a couple of times a year now. I would recommend a trip to the opticians followed by a trip to the docs. If you go straight to the docs they will ask if they have had an eye test. The optician will be able to look behind the eyes to make sure nothing nasty is going on. Certain foods can trigger migraines so keep a food diary and check if there is any sequence. Hopefully though its nothing serious and your little one will grow out of it like I did. Good luck!!!

yep good advice here - hubby gets them too and they are nasty. Definitely take her to opticians, and doctors, and do look at her diet. As sed, dairy products can make them worse. Best thing is to just put her to bed in a dark room, with a flannel on her forehead. Poor little girl!

Hiya, i took her to doc and they have said until she gets at least 4 attacks per month they can't put her on medication, they said to give nurofen and they gave her an anti sickness one too but this doesn't always work, she is now asking if she is due a migraine so it must be worrying her too,

thankyou for your reply, its very useful, my daughter has a very simple diet, she doesn't eat much stuff, generally chicken nuggets, sandwiches pizza, thats about it, shes always ate the same so it can't be her diet i don't think, doc says she doesn't have enough migraines in a month for him to give her medication, just said nurofen and an anti sickness medicine but that doesn't alway help, puberty sounds probable, thanks

Dark chocolate or anything that contains dark chocolate or cocoa gives me a migraine. Even the tiniest piece is enough to set me off. Is your daughter having anything that contains cocoa or dark chocolate, for example drinking chocolate, mousse, milkshakes, chocolate biscuits? Sometimes you have to look for the things that are "hidden" ingredients. Another trigger is cheese - do the migraines occur after she has eaten pizza? Most have a cheese topping. Like someone else on here said, keep a food diary over a few weeks and then check to see if there is a pattern. To help soothe her when she does get a migraine, buy some Tiger Balm (available at Tesco) and rub a TINY amount on her forehead, the balm cools but also has a stinging sensation which helps to ease the migraine. DO NOT use too much or it will be too much for her. An alternative is a menthol stick, available at Boots etc. I used to use Migraleve to relieve the pain and they were great, but not sure if they are suitable for a 9 year old, ask your local pharmacist.

Thanks for the message lucy, you've given me some great tips, she doesn't have much chocolate at all, and she doesn't get one after pizza as we had it the other day and she was fine, i will start to keep a food diary and see.

When I was a teenager I was getting migraines on a frequent basis my Dr suggested I take 1 fever few tablet a day (available from health food shops) I took these for about 5 years and only had migraines on very rare occasions, stopped tablets and the migraines came back!

OMG i went through all of this with my son. he was also rushed in with suspected meningitis, and at one stage, sent for a brain scan. he was eventualy diagnosed, through the process of elimination, with Lactose intolerance. we changed his diet to Lactose free, and have never looked back. hes 14 now, and hasnt had a migraine for ages .Lactose is in so many foods, even crisps, so it was difficult at first. but Tesco have a realy good range of lactose free foods, with soya instead of lactose ( milk, yoghurts, chocolate etc). i also found that the cheap brands (value) are usualy lactose free. good luck hun, let us know how you get on xx

hiya. warren seemed to have a dull headache a lot of the time, not enough for pain relief, but was having migraines every couple of weeks. exactly as you describe your daughter having. he also had problems pooing, not constipated, but changing from hard to soft/sloppy if you know what i mean. we cut out all lactose one day, and within a few days the headaches completely stopped. i cant remember the last time he had a migraine. its defo worth a try, then at least you know wether it is lactose. its a realy common problem aparently, and they can grow out of it over time. ps, hard cheeses such as those on pizza, dont contain lactose, so the dietician said anyway!!!

hi, thats very interesting, my son was diagnosed as lactose intolerant as a baby he then went on to become glucose intolerant, must be something to do with food! have to say though that now, he is not a sufferer of migraines so much but, when he gets a headache he takes strong painkillers and goes to bed, he is 15. I would recommend a visit/referral to the dietician, you can ask to be referred.

iv suffered with migran from the age of 5. 4/5 a year and many head aches to one a fornight that lasted 3 days between 9 and 11. they less now prob only 5/6 bad ones a year but i eat pain killers like sweets because of plain head aches. i was put on preventitives (my bad spelling) they take 4 weeks to work but they work. tomato, orange juice and onion can make you react as well as the ones every one warns you about (choc, cheese) try cutting out dairy products talk to doc first because of her age she need calciam. 2 a months sound loads to me go demand he sends you to some one who can help or get alagie test done

I'm allergic to dairy products, don't listen very much to the advice of no chocolates or cheese, I love it too much but I can have some really terrible migraines. Had one last night that is still sort of here today. I take some of my mum's really strong painkillers and have to go to bed early. I have them about once every couple of months or so.
