Rover 216 overheating S Reg

Has anyone any idea of the most likley cause of a 'out of the blue' overheating prob? After driving about 20 mls BIG boiling over problem after about 2 hours to cool refilled with cold water with open heater matrix & left cap off & continued to fill as required. Engine started with a little presuasion and the water appeared to circulate but started overheated again. Now engin it fails to start!! Any Ideas?
