I have an 89 transit 2.5 which has run perfectly well since I had it (got it about 9 months ago).

Suddenly the other day when I started it (started first time as usual) after about 100yards it stuttered and stopped bellowing grey smoke from the exhaust.

After a few tries it started Ok and drove well enough to get home (8 miles or so).

Haven't used it for a few days and this morning when I tried to start it it took a while. It ran for about 30 seconds and stalled again with grey smoke from the exhaust. Afterwards it would not start after a few turns so I stopped trying.

What potential problems do these symptoms suggest??

Any guidance appreciated.

Water was low - took about 1 - 1.5 litres to top it up to max.

I also noticed it appears to be leaking from the ousing at the top of the ngine where the water pipe from the water filler bottle goes in to a thermostat(??) housing.

How would the water level affect smoking ??

hi A exsternal water leek wouldnt but an internal one might. next check your oil filler cap for yellow gunk and also your dip stist for same or droplets of water on it. This would point to head gasket gone or crack somewhere. do you recal it over heating recently ?
process leak external lowers cooling efficency, leading to over heating followed by failure of a few things posible.

I have checked for excessive oil use and also for water - but they seem to be OK

The other day someone suggested something else - it may be a leaking valve seal. It was suggested that when I stop the engine and leave it for a while, residual oil in the rocked cover could be leaking through to the chamber, causing smoke when I start. The leak could be so small that insufficient oil is getting through to make it smoke whilst driving. On the occassions when it starts with no smoke, this could be because the valve with the leaking seal could be in the closed position.

This sounds plausible to me but -

- has anyone any opinions on this suggestion.
- if it is a leaking seal, how difficult are they to replace - can it be done without a major stipping of the head - apparently some vehicles can have the seal replaced without removing the valves.

Anyone???

I would suggest that you get someone to do a compression test done. It could be a head gasket, or even a piston ring problem.
Have you tried taking the plugs out and checking their condition?
I would expect valve stem oil seals to wear gradually, rather than suddenly causing the car to stop running.

Helloooo

Well I had leaking valve stem seals on my old 1990 orion, you go down the road and if you dipped the clutch and floor the accelerator, grey smoke used to come out, had to take the head off, strip the head down, replaced head gasket etc,,, but to be honest, it never stalled, was running the motor for about 2 yrs with leaking seals.

It's an old van, unless the engine been changed in the past or the head, head could be cracked, warn valves, warn seals rings, go to a garage, give mately a drink and he'll tell you whats wrong with it.
