Have been last January. Stayed in Manila. A place one hears so much that you feel that if you do not go you will have missed something. Away from Manila, Philippines is truly beautiful and worh a visit. Best DIY than with tours. You will miss the buzz and the food. Be safe with food you are interested in. Even in the top restaurant we ended up with food poisoning simply using some of their home made seafood sauce. People are generally helpful. However, pickpocket is rift. we were in the jeepney and stoped by the traffic and a thief snatched my wife's gold chain and diamond pendant. Therefore no jewellery or expensive watch. Certainly do not wear a fake designer watch it may cost you your arm. When taking a taxi always get the price, no meter and lock you car door!!!

Went to the Philippines last October. We stayed at a Hotel in Romblon, 10 hour ferry ride from Manila. We were fortunate as my brother lives there, and told us prior to our visit not to wear any jewellery. We saw the raw side of the Philippines, and must say after getting used to the stares, some had never seen a white person and we were the only ones on the island. We loved every minute, treated like royalty. Poverty is the norm, but never met such helpful and happy people ever. If we said no to any begging you were left alone. Always drank bottled water and even did teeth in it. Tried all local quisine and no sickness at all, but checked on cleanliness at all times. Sanitry arrangements got some getting used to, take a loo roll with you as they do not use, not to be flushed either, nappy sacks a good idea for it to be popped in bin.
