i think it's a case of adjustment, but not sure what type of linkage your car has to the gearbox, cables or rods, was the gear change ok when you bought it,

on the 2001 0n mondeo they where supplied with a tool (plastic) that locked the lever in position whilst the cables were adjusted
2001 Mondeo with MTX 75 manual transmission below is a tsb for ford

Markets: All

Subject: Difficulty changing gear, cannot engage gear, transmission jumps out of gear

Summary

Should a customer express concern over difficulties changing gear, unable to engage gear, transmission jumping out of gear, or that 5th gear can only be engaged when reverse gear enable is operated at the same time, the probable cause is maladjustment of the gearshift cables. To rectify this concern, the gearshift cables should be adjusted according to a revised Service Instruction.

The alignment tool, gear lever 308-436 (16-097), coloured red, will be left in the glove compartment during production and delivered with the vehicle.

Note:
Before installing a new transmission, make sure that the concern is not caused by the gearshift cables, the gearshift lever or the shift and selector levers on the transmission.

If the concern cannot be resolved by adjusting the gearshift cables, check the gearshift lever, the shift and selector levers on the transmission and the shift mechanism for damage and rectify as necessary.

The relevant procedures in the TIS-CD will be amended to include this new information at the next update.
