I have a 2001 Mk3 Mondeo Zetec 1.8 petrol. When the fuel gauge drops below 1/4 full the car runs fine, and starts OK if the engine is still warm, but wont start from cold-taking the fuel inlet pipe off at the engine end no fuel is coming through. Putting fuel in from a can solves the problem-the car splutters on the key a few times then starts and runs no problem. I have replaced the fuel filter but it makes no difference, the engine management light is on though. The low fuel warning light does not come on-this problem happens before the level drops low enough, I know that the fuel light does work.

I have taken to keeping the fuel gauge above 1/2 at all times (and a gallon in a can in the boot just in case) and had no problems since, but am puzzled - is it low fuel pump pressure and if so how has that happened, or an engine management issue?

Forgot to mention-when starting from cold with plenty of fuel in the tank , engine always fires up then cuts out after a few seconds. Then starts fine on second attempt just with using the key. If you press the accelerator down it wont fire up at all, so I leave the pedal well alone when starting.

Wonder if there is a connection with all these things?

have you checked the air vent to the tank it sounds like its blocked or kinked arr i missed the bit about the engine managment light being on it has flagged up a fault you could do with it being read on a diagnostic
