Hi folks. I have just joined this lovely club.
I don't have a camper at the moment. Sold my husband's van after he sadly died 2 years ago, and now hankering over buying another one. We have always had VW campers, and I'm hoping to find a T4 that can take me out and about again.
I'm intrigued at the popularity of the Talbot Express on the forum.

Anyway, look forward to chatting to you guys about all things camper!

Hi LT and welcome to the forum.
Go and buy another camper and get out and enjoy it,you will get loads of help on here as this is the best site for all your questions you may have.
There are a lot of single females with campers and probably the best places to stay are pubs with campsites so you can get the best of both worlds.
Also look on http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk this is another very good site for info and a great list of campsites.
Please keep us informed and ask anything that you need to know.

Wyn

Hi LT - and welcome from me, too!
I second everything that Wyn has said. The Talbots are very popular, but you must remember that they are a very old model now and require quite a bit of maintenance (I think the last ones were made in 1994) so you either need to be a bit of a mechanic or know someone who is. Just something to bear in mind when you're looking. :-)
Kind regards
D

Thanks D.
I have a very soft spot for VW campers, so will probably be looking for a T4: not as much maintenance as the 84, and 72 models we had in the past!
I am hoping maybe someone on here may have one for sale sometime soon.

Hi Lyn,
I migrated from the VW community too; had some great times in our T3, but last year we went looking for more space and comfort in our old age! LOL.
You might already know of it but, just in case, there's a very good T3 club/forum at http://www.club80-90.co.uk where you might well find a T4 for sale.
Happy hunting!!

Thanks D. I'm already a member of club 80-90 but haven't been on forum for ages, so will pop in today. Cheers for reminding me. I seem to have joined every vw forum that exists!
What made you move to Talbot Express? I have never seen one that wasn't driving past on the road! So many of them out there. How reliable are they?

Hi Lyn,
I can only talk about coachbuilts based on the TE; converted panel vans are a different story.

Getting a TE was just incidental really. The T3 was a high-top and was (I thought) just the job and we had some good trips in her, but as age caught up with us it became a little 'uncomfortable' (particularly for her indoors LOL) so we went looking for a bigger van. We came across this Talisman on ebay one day and decided to go and have a look. To be honest, it was a wreck, but we were really impressed by the space inside, the facilities, storage space etc. so we kept on looking! Eventually we came across the one that we bought - the fact that it was built on a TE was really incidental! It was within our price range and looked a good buy. And it has proved so!
Reliability: there appears to be 2 main problems with the TE that you will see numerous posts on here about;
1) Gear change linkages: many many people have reported problems with difficult gear selection.
2) Electrical systems: Lots of problems here, too; but generally they can all be traced back to poor earths; it just takes a while sometimes!!

Power is an issue for some people - they are not the fastest thing on 4 wheels and they struggle up hills. The variants are 2 Ltr Petrol; 2.5 Ltr Diesel and 2.5 Ltr Turbo diesel. The turbo diesel is the most powerful, followed by the petrol. The N/A diesel is the worst in terms of power.

Spares are sometimes difficult to obtain, but not impossible. I haven't done all that many miles in mine as yet - maybe 2000 - but she has never let me down. Lots of people on here take their vans abroad with no problems at all.

Hope that helps
Kind regards
D

Thanks again D for all that interesting info.

I am going to Volksfest Wales next weekend in Margham Park, and there will be some some campers for sale, so I will be hoping I might see something. I think I would find it difficult moving away from VW as I have made many great friends in VW world! They can be quite addictive (the campers that is!)
We did have a Renault Traffic camper once a long time ago, which was lovely to drive.
Anyway, whatever I do get in the end, I just love waking up in the middle of a field! No hotels where you have to 'dress' for breakfast for me!
Thanks again D.
