Does anyone know if a 2001 Y plate mk3 Mondeo petrol 1.8 has the same dual mass flywheel as the diesels?-I know these cause trouble and also ruin starter motors.

Mine has a clattering noise for a few seconds from the engine on start up, I have checked for anything loose and there isnt. Could it be the flywheel? The car drives fine, clutch and gearchange are A1 and the starter motor operates as it should. This noise has been there since I bought the car 6 months ago (for only £650 I thought it was worth taking the chance) and hasnt got any worse.

some of the mondeo engines do rattle a little on start-up, which can be caused by the hydraulic tappets. Get someone to start the car while you listen under the bonnet. Does the noise come from the top of the engine, and does it do it if you switch the engine off when hot and re-start it straight away?
If it goes away after a few seconds, it's probably nothing to worry about. An oil and filter change would be a good idea if you haven't done it already. £20 or so.

MK 3 petrol engines were fitted with dual mass flywheels, but it seems to be a bit contentious as to wether all did, i have a 1.8 petrol and according to my local ford dealer it was not fitted with one, before i bought this one i looked at a 2.0 ghia and it had just had its flywheel replaced and a mate at work with a 2.0 has had to replace his.
