Hi, the blue smoke when starting is probably caused by worn oil seals on the valve stems. the other fault is strange, but I wonder if you have some water in the fuel system, and the new filter has become saturated again.

If you aren't using any oil, I'd be inclined to leave it until it gets worse.
On some cars I believe it's possible to change the seals without removing the cylinder head, but on others it's a bigger job.

hi

when you say its blowing blue smoke, are you standing behind it or looking throught the rear view mirror ?, depending on your reply it will help us determine how bad it really is ?

In the mean time try adding some injector cleaner in with the next tank full of fuel, you may have an injector that needs a little clean, as you say it cant be that bad if your getting 55 mpg.

Al

hi

thanks for your explicit reply, exactly what we needed to assist with diagnosis

The fuel smell is unburnt fuel, indicating that at least one cylinder is not fireing properly hence unburnt fuel is passing down the exhaust pipe. Probably poor spray patern from the injestors.

If you purchase a bottle of fuel additive (for diesels) about £6-8 & follow the instructions on the bottle, some you add the whole bottle others are more concentrated where you add so much per so many litres of fuel.
If you do this and give car a good fast run you should notice a difference
very soon. Re check the exhaust say in a week or few hundred miles time.

Al
