yesterday i went out and the car started to overheat, i turned the heaters on to keep the temperature down to get home, i realised that the fan isn't cutting in, in my frustration i let my neighbour try and bridge the connector by the radiator, nothing happened, he then tried a wire direct from the battery and several showers of sparks later (he assures me he knows what he was doing!) the fan kicked into life, so im guessing the motor is ok?? but having removed the wire it stopped and i obviously cant have the fan on continuously,
rather than let him at my car again, and as i would prefer to learn how to do the repairs my self i am wondering if anyone can tell me how/where to start looking for faults, (done the fuses) not the stereo typical blonde :-) haha!
after he left the car i noticed the stereo wasn't working, nor the lights found the fuses for both were blown, but also the abs light is illuminated on my dash any help would be very much appreciated
in simple layman's terms please as im not really mechanically minded, sorry for the long post but thought as much detail as poss would help,
thanks in advance for any ideas

it will be the fan switch on the thermostat housing(if 16v or cvh)really common on these but could do with nowing engine size and year really .quick tip a customer of mine has learn't this week is she got a neighbour to wire a bluetooth kit in to her car ,he soldered a wire to an enginemanagement wire and it blew the ecu .£350 later bluetooth kit wired correctly and a new ecu.i know neighbours have the best intention but cars are getting more technical and easier to make costly mistakes when wiring after market kits in or bridging components out under the bonnet!!! regards adrian

Id advise getting the abs light reset. You can by a machine to do it although I know not how much or give a auto eletrician a call. I had to do this when I pulled a airbag fuse, to get the light reset.
