Berlingo 2001 lack of power
Messages 1 to 8 of 8.
The problem is lack of power when the car is shown any type of hill. The engine starts with quite a substancial noise from the engine bay which settles after a few minutes. The car has done 48k and runs well on a motorway. I understand its not a Veyron but the 1.9 engine should deliver a little more than this is doing. Any help or advice welcome. Andy
I travel in to North Wales a couple of times of week and on the way home on the A55 when I get to Rault Hill I am down in forth gear, 3000 revs at just under 60mph. That is the best I can do up that hill, I find top speed on mine on the flat is just about 87mph and once it finds a climb it is soon drops away. Otherwise a great vehicle for what they are. I had a Peugeot 406 1.9 before and this used to fly up Rault Hill, hit it about 75mph and you would be still pulling in the third lane at the top, heavy car but had turbo. The 1.9 DW8 1868cc engines just need a turbo. Dave.
I cant say I have ever had to drop down to fourth on Rault hill tho. I use this road regular myself. Thinking along the lines the belt has slipped a notch this is a common prob i believe. Thanks for your reply Dave.
If I stay in fifth gear up Rault then it struggles at 50mph, I know two other people that have the same vehicle and engine as mine and they both say this is normal for these engines as they lack a turbo. When I bought mine in April I was disappointed at first with the performance up hills but after making enquires was told not to expect much more up hills. Mines usually loaded up as I do the market at Tir Prince, Towyn a couple of times a week so maybe mine is sluggish due to the extra weight. Have you had the problem with the rattling Aux belt tensioner ? mine rattles about at 1100 rpm, my mechanic has never managed to cure one from what he tells me. Aux Belt flaps a bit until the engine comes off fast idle. After that its OK. Dave.
Something i did find out Tony was the Van dosent like much over 4,000 revs in 4th gear. It bellowed out Blue Grey smoke and rattled its tits off untill I switched her off. Kakked myself. Any Ideas Tone? Cheers Andy
I suspected the timing belt had slipped a notch, had it checked and was told everything was OK. The Milage is now fast approaching 50K and thought it wouldnt be a bad idea to get the belt and tensioner replaced. I havent as yet done this. What do you think? The engine revs fine stationary, Ticks over like a good en. Just this lack of power when shown a hill. Some times she flys up em then another time it feels quite sick. No sign of smoke anytime, other than if it hits 4K revs very strange. Its got me baffled Tony. On a motorway at 70 mph she dosent miss a beat. Would you change fuel filter at this point ? Air Filter is fine Tony. You say could be fault on the fuel pump. Do you mean maybe an injector failing? Thanks for any imput Tone. Andy
