Hi all, Got a 1999 [T] ford escort 1.6i finesse zetec, the problem I have is that the brakes dont really work that well, it's got new pads/discs and cylinders, and when the engines started the brake pedal moves down a bit as it should, but basicaly it feels like when you apply the handbrake it slows down really gently, thats what happens when you apply the footbrake, Unless you stand on it and the wheels lock up momentarily and then release a bit, guessing the abs is working, and the pedal doesn't travel to the floor, basicaly the brake pedal just feels really heavy, The previous owner lowered it on GAZ suspension and put 17 inch alloys on it, I was wondering if that would affect it, theres no leaks, fluid is on max mark and is nice and clean, so not sure where to look next, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

firstly you need to check to see if you have air in the system, due to fitting new rear cylinders, you will need to bleed the system again, then one way of checking to see if the servo is working ok, with the engine not running, pump the brake pedal a few times until it goes hard, with your foot still on the brake pedal start the engine, the pedal should go towards the floor by about 2-3 inches

I thought if there was air in the system the brake would be spongy and sometimes travel to the floor? it drops about an inch to an inch and a half. cheers. forgot to mention its had new calipers on the front, nothing done on the back.

It sounds servo related to me - are you sure the sevo is working?

Well yes it certainly sounds servo related, but as I said the brake pedal moves down when the engine is started, it brakes a bit better if i use a slightly heavier foot, but the brake pedal just feels hard, theres about 2 inches of play in the brake pedal before it starts braking and then it just seems to hit a hard spot and it's a real struggle to push it any further, and as i said if i "stand" on it, the wheels lock up, and then release, due to the abs i guess, which is why i was wondering if it was because of the modifications, but the cars only done 61k with full history, and had that complete front end brake rebuild not long ago, so I'm guessing it must be something deeper, if everyone is at a loss i will probably replace the servo to start with, I can get 1 for £40 so it's not the end of the world. thanks.
