Ok so I now have a new addition to my idling problem, when cold it's pumping out clouds of blue smoke whilst accelerating, this clears up when warm, thats also when the idling gets better, ive changed the plugs as they were manky and I found that the top of them were covered in oil so I'm guessing the rocker gasket is leaking, the air filter is quite new, not sure about the fuel filter and the leads look quite old, the smoke is blue so I'm guessing it's fuel related, for anyone who didnt see my previous post about the idling problem its a 1999 ford escort 1.6 zetec finesse, thanks.

ok, well il stick some fuel cleaner in it and give it a good blast, and keep an eye on the oil level at the same time, the levels not dropping though, and the fumes smell of petrol, my old astra van used to burn oil like mad and the smoke was always black, but il keep a check on it. thanks.

Worn piston rings (and cylinder bore) will lead to oil being burnt but so will clogged piston rings that cannot move freely.I think you may be able to buy something to pour in the plug holes to clear this - never tried it though. Also it can be down to worn valve seals. The usual check is to see whether the blue smoke appears when you open throttle (rings) or on the over-run as the engine slows down with throttle closed (valve seal)

It does it on idle and whilst accelerating, but stops smoking when engine reaches operating temperature.
