I have an R Reg 1997 Fiesta Fusion Zetec. 1242cc. Most days when you start it it idles OK for a bit then the revs slowly climb to about 4000. You can prompt this by revving up a bit, sometimes it will then idle at a much higher speed than normal. It sometimes does it when the engine is hot. If you disconnect the Throttle position sensor it will idle OK. the TPR measures 632 ohms at idle: there is 0.9v on the wiper at idle when the fault is on. ( measured by pushing a needle into the centre wire to contact the copper conductors.) I have been told that these measurements are typical. The throttle shuts correctly, and these measurements are always the same. When you are driving the revs stay high if you depress the clutch and take your foot off the gas..I have unplugged the road speed sensor...no change. Some days its fine.
Anyone got any ideas?

hi ttaunton, this is a known fault assuming you have checked for air leaks try disconecting the battery for 20 mins then reconnect drive car for short while make sure you achieve hard accelaration ,overrun and idle several times see if it sorts itself if not let me know and i will dig the bulliten out from work best of luck carlos p.s also check the breather pipes see if any split as this causes high revs to

Hi Carlos
Thanks for the info. There are no leaks in any pipes as far as I can see. If you slow the engine down by going into gear and gently releasing the clutch with the handbrake on to drag the engine down to about 1K revs then it will stay there, until you press the gas pedal and take it above 3K say, then it will stay there at that speed. Makes driving difficult and uses a lot of petrol! Any way, if you remove the plug from the Throttle position pot it behaves itself, and the engine behaves as normal. So the other day at work, I made up a 1K variable pot and a 100 ohm resistor and encapsulated it in epoxy. I then connected this between ground and the wiper of the throttle pot. At idle the throttle pot measured 0.9v. By adjusting my new pot I could vary the idle voltage fed to the engine management. I found by trial and error that if I set it to about 0.4v then all my problems went away and the engine idled correctly and the revs didn't "hang on" at all. I have used it quite a lot with the mod on and can't fault it, hot or cold. Apparently the correct voltage is 0.9v: my throttle pot was completely predictable and measured 63 or so ohms when shut. Simple maths, with 5v at the top of the pot give 0.9v as expected. Anyway, at 0.4v it all works fine! It may be that disconnecting the engine management would sort it all out, force a reset. Unfortunately I don't have the code for the radio, so I will need to remove the fuse to the unit....do you know what the fuse is called? Is doing this reset likely to cause any grief? If this is a problem known to Ford, what is the official fix?

Thanks for your help
