Hi, I'm going to help a friend with his project this weekend he has fitted the 3.5 V8 rover engine out of the old Rover SD to a racing chassis problem is he can't get a spark what would be the basic things to check.

Thanks John.

It depends on if it has points or electronic ignition. Is there no spark from the coil to earth?

Thanks for your reply. He mentioned points, coil, and an electronic system he also asked if there should be a ballast resister, it's been a long time since I worked on petrol engines but I'm hoping it will all come flooding back.

Early engines had points later models have electronic. The electronic system will not have a ballast resistor. I had one of these recently that had breakdown & starting problems. Both times it was the rotor arm leaking to earth. If you need an ignition amp then you will have to get an 'Intermotor' one as Lucas no longer exist.
I have a haynes manual so let me know if you need a wiring diagram. Send me a pm by clicking on my id if you need to.

I've just been to have a look, the distributor has what looks like a magnetic breaker (no points) and a small ignition module on the side of it with two wires coming out of it and a new 12 volt coil, as it's a kit car he's putting it together as he goes so I don't know if these are compatible with each other or if there should be a control box.
If that's all that's needed how are they connected.

Thanks for your help John.

There is no control box with this setup, just the amp on the distributor. I need to look the wiring up. However it is quite simple. I will get you a diagram later today.

Glad to hear you got it sorted. Make sure you always have a spare rotor arm. They tend to leak to earth via the rivit that holds the blade in place. Also there are different spark plugs depending on high or low compression. Take a look at the engine no. plate to see which you have. Cheers.
