I have a home computer and a laptop which is wireless, we are buying a caravan [static] and would like to take the laptop to use. Can I 'piggyback' a wireless network from someone else, without having to use a key to access. Also what range does the wireless have. Thanks

Hello. Here's part of an earlier discussion:
'Using another persons WiFi network has been illegal since 2003. Arrests are made under the Computer Misuse Act and Section 125 of the Communications Act 2003. the first conviction for this offence was in 2005. Here is such a case:

I wasn't thinking of doing or knowing about anything illegal.!!! I was thinking more of something along the lines of the eurotunnel passengers area, or the Little Chef free internet connections. Also some of the motor way service stops also do this. So thought you might be able log on to the internetgenerally. I know Gordon Brown said that everyone should have free broadband connections, so was thinking along these lines. So was asking if there was anywhere that covered areas for free internet connections generally, if you can understand what I am saying. I am a complete novice when it comes to computers, so I don't know the ins and outs of everything. Just know what the computer does for me , e.mails etc., msn and skype. Thak you for your reply Charlie.

what you need is getting say an o2 (or similar) wi fi dongle, it does cost but gives you access to internet anywhere, you could if you live or caravan is close to a cafe or access point get an free connection but they only give I think 1/2 hour free though you normally have to buy a cuppa from them and ask for username and password for the half an hour
dongles are only about £10 now and 15 a month

We do a lot of motorhoming both here and abroad.
We take a laptop - many sites offer free Internet access (beware of the high charges at CC and similar sites).
Also use restaurants (e.g. McDonalds) which give access for the price of a coffee!
Set your Internet Explorer connection setting to "Automatically Detect" and search for the appropriate wireless network (right click on your wireless icon bottom right of screen and select "View available networks" or similar.
You may need a WEP/WPA key (security) from the provider - but I've found that particularly abroad unsecured access is given.
Never had to pay for WiFi wireless access, but if you go down the "wireless dongle" route I recommend the Vodafone PAYG

I wouldn't recommend using internet connections that don't require any kind of security key- it is incredibly easy for someone to intercept your transmissions (read what you send). If you want to use the i'net on the move, the dongle's are probably best, but will only work if you are in areas where you can get signal, just like with your mobile phone.
As for connecting to the internet "generally" you can only connect when you have some form of connection, be it a wired or wireless one. And the range of wireless is relatively short, depending on what sort of router/access point used (the things that send out the wireless signals for your computer to connect to).
