I was wondering if anyone had any help and advice for me. I have a 4 year old boy who has never been a good sleeper. He started to sleep through the night at around 3 years of age, after years of sleep traing and even being refered to a specialist doctor as sleep apnea was queried. Sadly its happening again, since May this year Ben is just refusing to sleep, he will not settle at night and after hours of him lying in bed laughing and chanting unrecogniseable words, and kicking his covers about he finally goes to sleep for a couple of hours then the whole routine starts again.

I have tried sleep training methods that were used previously. Sitting with him till he is asleep and slowly withdrawing, verbally telling him to "lie down and go to sleep" and ignoring the behaviour completely.

I really do not know what to do he has a calm bedtime routine but will not sleep.
I have had to collect him from school today before lunch as he had fallen asleep and teachers could not wake him! I have him booked into the doctors on Tuesday next week as this is the earliest appointment I could get.
Any help advice or miracle cures would be greatly appreciated.....

Hi Vicky and Alfie,

Thank you, I had spoken to the health visitor a couple of months back and her attitude was he would sleep when he was tired :0S But now he just can't cope with school and is so shattered he is being tearful and refusing to eat properly.

Hopefully when he goes to the doctors they can suggest something to help him. Fingerscrossed.

I don't know how I am still going either lol... Lots of fresh air and dog walking me thinks....Ur dog is stunning I love English Bull Terriers!

I have this prob with my son. He didnt sleep through the night until he was 4 1/2 yrs old. This was dispite sleep clinics etc. Even they admitted defeat!! At 4 1/2 he did start to sleep better but still not every night. He is nearly 9 now and still has probs. He usually gets worse when he has stress like when he started junior school and when he returned to school after the 6 week break. Im really sorry as I cant offer any wonder cure but just support like vicky. It drives you insane some nights doesnt it?? the doctor offered drugs in the end. I did try it for 2 weeks but felt quite guilty that i was doing that to him. And the fact that it only worked for a few days anyway!!

So sorry I have had problems with my internet and have no been online. thank you both for your offers of support I do have MSN so will add you. Well doctor referred me to my health visitor who came out to see me last week, she could not suggest doing anything different with Ben other then reading his bedtime book in his bed to him so this has started last week. So far there has been no improvement in his sleeping routine and last night he did not settle off until 23:00 and was awake again from 1:30am till 04:30 am, he then woke up at 06:00 hours... needless to say we are both shattered and tearful.. My health visitor is going to contact me again in 4 weeks time to see if there is any improvement... Fingerscrossed :oS x

Laura.

Before my son was diagnosed with Autism about 3 years ago we were in the same situation. What worked quite well was walking the legs off of him about an hr before he went to bed....however this was normally difficult due to his behaviour...but it did work and ease the situation.

hi my son 6 is under community peadiatrition and she has prescribed melotonin 2mls at bedtime, it is only prescribed by commumity peads not gp but is working a treat, it is a naturally occuring hormone so doesn't make them groggy in the morning like sleeping drugs do. you couls ask to be referred if you are not already. hope things improve.

Hi well just a quick update I have tried running Bens legs off an hour before bed and this has had no effecton his sleep. It has been 2 week since I have seen my health visitor again and although she asked me to gie him 4 weeks with his new bedtime routine (which is the same as he has alway had but other than reading book downstairs he has it read in bed) and i can see no difference, bed today at 7:15 awake kicking about in bed laughing till 9:45 awakes at 1:50 same routine goes quiet for 10 mins at 3:50 wakes his little brother up at 4:00 and fingers crossed i think has just gone back to sleep at 05:50.
So tired :0(... Do you think its to early to recontact the HV to tell her no difference?

I am not currently refferd to a peadiatrition but am going to make another appointment to see my GP see if they can refer me?

yes i would go to gp asap and list problems and get referred to peadiatrition, they can check out to see if any underlying problems that are causing him not to sleep. if you not already doing it keep a diary to show them and take a list with you so you dont forget anything. h.v. can give sleep advice and routine advice but thats about it. good luck

Thank you I got Ben to the doctors who saw how shattered I am, he is being referred to a peadiatrition so finger crossed things are going in the right direction now. I did start a diary a couple of nights ago so will keep up with that to show his night time behaviours. GP did try to bat me to the health visitor again but I explained the last 3 that have been at the surgery have not been able to help me to get him to sleep.

Well Ben is in bed now kicking about and laughing and making his normal noises... fingerscrossed for a better night tonight although I am not hopeful :0(

hope your night was not too bad last night, my little horror is just off to bed now but we let him go bit later at weekend. he is not naughty he just lies in bed but doesn't go to sleep. this melatonine does seem to be helping though. have just seen an advert for programme about a kid who has sleep probs coming on channel 4 on thurs 9pm, might be worth a look. good luck.

Hi, although my son is now 25.... and is so laid back now.. he had similar probs with his sleep when he was 3/4 yrs. he was very hyper-active all day too..... I didn't get any help from docs.. so decided to look at his diet.... I took him right back to basics.... NO pop/sweets/pre-cooked meals from shops... It was a hard thing to do at the time... but WOW within 4 weeks my then little boy changed from a monster into a cutie.. I was very careful not to let him have e numbers.... didn't bye biscuits.. but made as much as I cud... not easy as worked full time.... Check his diet.... all the best luv... It must be very difficult for you all.... thinking of you.. I know wot its like......

Are you sure he isn't having the Night terrors and is maybe afraid to fall asleep , especially if he is trying to make up for it in the day ? does he ever wake up really crying during a sleep , it is a pretty common problem , i know as i have suffered from it myself and it's really frightening , you can't wake up and feel totally paralysed , it was only when i started to really force myself to open my eyes that it began to improve .

Hi senorita Anita,

its so good to know that I am not the only one who has contended with a terrible sleeper. I will certainly take your advice and have a look at his diet, I am fortunate enought to only work 2 days a week so i do cook most of Ben's meals myself from scratch. I have stopped his biscuits etc a few months ago in an attempt to sort his sleep put before he started school. I will certainly see how many e numbers are contained in his diet and packed lunchs he takes to school and see if i can improve things there for him. If I could help him sleep I would do anything. Thank you x

Hi Rintintin,

Thank you. No Ben does not wake up crying, my youngest who is 2 has suffered a period of having these night terrors and wakes up unconsolable and petrified, so having seen Tom suffer with them I really do not think that is what is hindering Bens sleep.
Ben is happy enough in bed he laughs and giggles and talks/chants, kicks about in bed and at his wall by his bed. He does not get upset or cry out, I really have no idea why he will not sleep.
