Driver's side electric window will not open. I can hear a faint 'click' behind the door trim, when I press the switch to the 'open' position.
I get the same 'click' if I use the switch in the 'close' position.
Is it likely to be a failed window regulator motor?
If so, how can I test it to be sure it is faulty, before going ahead and getting a replacement?
All the wiring to the switch appears in good order.

See if you can get hold of another drivers side switch the same as yours, and try that first.
I had the same problem last year only differance was that it was the passenger side that wouldn't work, I swapped the drivers switch and hey presto it all worked again.

I've had this problem a couple of times. I suspect it is either crud or moisture getting into the switch as after pumping it full of WD40 it worked fine.
Also try disconnecting the switch and cleaning up the contacts.
Don't forget the autodrop window is contolled by a computer so it's possible it wants resetting by disconnecting the power to it for a short time. Just a thought.

I have tested the switch with a 12v tester. It shows that there is power getting to the wiring connector which fits onto the regulator motor, when the window switch is pressed.
Also, there is still this clicking sound which appears to be from the area around the motor.
So, do you think I am right to assume it is a faulty motor?

Mine still made a clicking noise, but it was still the switch at fault.
Do you have any mates with a 406 that you could borrow before paying for one?

It's possible the motor/autodrop THINKS it's fully open/closed when you press the switch. It's got some override that stops you from being able to break the motor/regulator when it's fully open/closed or the window is frozen shut with ice. Try "assisting" it when you press the switch by pushing the glass downwards or give the door a good slam to free the mechanism.

Just been in the Peugeot garage today with the same problem for a bit of advice. The guy there said to try helping it on its way and the reason it won't go down or as mine did went down when the switch was in the up postion is possibly because the runners, window rubbers get tight on the window and as there is the anti pinch/stop switch it would naturally stop. Personally I think the switch is knackered which will cost £120 + vat! Any advice as I don't have a spare 406 to try the switch would be much appreciated.

Have a look on ebay for switches. They are on there all the time.

Thank you to all those who have offered advice and suggestions. I have just finished solving my problem.

As I already said, I tested the switch to make sure it was working.

I then removed the door trim and insulation so I could disconnect the wiring from the motor. I then went to the local breakers and removed a motor and regulator from a similar model 406. I was then able to test it on my car by temporarily connecting it while holding it.

As it appeared to be working satisfactorily, I bought it and having fitted it, the window now opens and closes as it should.
