hello , I bought a hobby 560 few years ago to be towed with a honda legend.it towed well but was not legal.I found out too late. I sold the caravan . end of the story. tonight I saw the forum and was thinking what would be the law regarding tourists from the continent visiting the uk with what would be an illigal outfit in the uk? Do they go under uk laws? just a thought....

if tourists from abroad tow a hobby caravan not using a commercial vechical they do so at there own risk but if they are pulled by the police the same rule applies to them as does to us we owned a hobby for some years and towed with a 3.2 shogun and that car was still illigal

Upto model 540 are 2.3 metres wide.....It's only models 560 and above that are 2.5 metres wide and require a larger tow vehicle ( in excess of 3500kgs)

thanks smiff for your email. But I knew that.I unfortunatly found out after buying my 560 few years back. it first got stolen and recovered the same day from Crawley to kendal ! got it fixed and sold it half price! what a nightmare. I was only wondering what would happened to tourists coming over with a 2.5 metre wide caravan like we have on the continent.(not unusual ) could they be stopped at Dover and forced to turn back or would the police or vosa turn a blind eye? thanks for the attention given to my message.

If the officer actually new the law & realised that it was an illegal van then he would have no choice but to take action, what that action would be, as well as stopping the vehicle travelling any further, i really don't know. Keith...

i believe the "tourist" would have very little trouble from the law, they would have too much paperwork to file to even start with. the travelling folk use hobby caravans a lot for the value and size plus they are fancy, THEY definately do NOT get any grief from the law. i looked at a hobby two years ago and looked into the legality of the width as i had issues with a boat trailer that came from the usa that was too wide for towing with non commercial vehicles. the dealer that had the hobby said he never had any problems BUT when pushed if it was illegal he just grinned and said only if you get caught. i asked him if i did not ask would he have told me or any other customer. again he said to tell the law that i was from southern ireland and that they could not enforce that rule on me.(I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE) BUT more important he said that he had sold hobby's before and no one had been caught yet by this rule, had the buyers been told that the van they had was illegal i asked,,,, he smirked and said "what you don't know you don't worry about". that is why there is a lot of hobby vans out there. it is a pity cos the van i looked at was a beaut, but not if i got fined. there is talk of a major clamp down on this sort of thing. especially at the ferry terminals between scotland and northern ireland, a mate of mine was at a rally in scotland and the law had pulled every towing vehicle going to the ferry. he was in a transit towing his rally car but got fined £1000 for being overweight, and width.

I have always fancied owning a hobby but have often wondered how easy it would be to get them serviced or repaired.

I beleive although you would have to sheck it further that the traffic police would serve something similar to a G9 and could impound the vehicles. However in my experience not many of them know the law well enough or choice to ignore it unless the trailer is in a state of such disrepair that they can not.Hope that helps
