Is your pc new or second hand ? and do you have the original windows cd with it ? If it didn`t accept the serial number, then you could activate it offline, by telephone, you can try and go into safe mode F8, or re-install windows again, it will overwrite windows, but you may lose docs and photos etc. You can only activate online a certain amount of times then you have to activate over the phone to cut down piracy, if you have a copied version of windows, then you may need to buy an original.Or boot up from cd and using the windows cd try the windows repair option. Alternatively, you may have to ring the microsoft helpline for the uk

I had this problem, with a legit version of XP Home Edition, which was ok with the computer, second hand that came with it,as I upgraded and reinstalled windows, twice, but when I built my own computer, the activation key not accepted. Had to download a program, which overcome this and my version of XP has been accepted,by Microsoft

I notice some people are using a program/s from http://www.egydown.com and apparently it/they work one XP version is already activated for immediate use.bearing in mind you use these programs at your own risk, this is only a suggestion to possibly get you out of trouble as activating is not always as easy as some make out??? though activation has now been cracked and these versions are accepted by microsoft AFAIK

HI, had this problem with activation, go on ebay, buy a disc that recovers your key to all programs, that needs a key to activate them, eg, office, anti-virus, O/S, ect on your computer , they charge about £4-00 for it, its called,(key recovery)reboot in safe mode, click F10 or F8. or borrow a set up disc, just to get windows on your computer, then install the disc, it will give you your key in number FOR THAT COMPUTER, then just register that number. hope this works for you, it did for me,six times in all.DAVE

You need to contact the person who sold you the PC. If you have a PC with a genuine copy of windows it will have a sticker somewhere on the case with the license key on it. Anyone who sells a windows OS PC without this are doing it illegally. If you have been sold your PC without this you have bought pirate software. You can follow the prompts and buy a genuine copy, it's about £90.00 for XP. Failing that have a look round eBay for a COA sticker. Not a method condoned by Microsoft but the cheapest way to get it done other than contacting the seller and advising them that they have sold you pirate software and you are reporting them!

burnside.the key is not hidden in the o/s ie the XP or whatever you installed needs one of two things to happen Activation directly from Microsoft, the key as its called on the sticker is the licence key to install the o/s not an activation key ie without it you wont even install windows let alone run it.the other method which I suspect you have bought and been ripped off is a method which prevents windows from asking for the activation key and fools windows into thinking its already done, probem is with it you dont know when the o/s will realise its wrong and prevent you from using it altogether its only a temp workaround. Proper pirate activation has only just been done and by a simple mistake made by one manufacturer and as said its only just been done so no way will your disc activate your windows, recover licence keys it will do but people Do CONFUSE the two ie think licence key is activation key but they are not the same

The activation key is generated from the license key. Use belarc and it will find the license key, genuine or not.

Many thanks for all the suggestions.Even using a keyfinder program to get the code from an XP does not work in the Activate screen. I did manage to buy a XP recovery disk with code and have loaded the program on 2 hard-drives and activated, but not registered the program. This seems to have worked, so I am happy.

Officially any Operating system should only be used on one machine...in reality win 98/me can be installed on as many Pc`s as you want because they dont need activating like XP and (Vista worst OS so far) but some pc manufacturers did make it hard to use 98 me on another pc but most were ok. XP Vista activation isnt anything to do with registration of the OS and once activated can be re installed as many times as you like, with one exception that is a reinstall after more than one hardware unit has been replaced ie you can normally replace a hard drive and usually get away without having to reactivate (there are exceptions to do with manufacturer) but if you replace say a hard drive and say sound card then you would normally have to phone up for reactivation,......then again if you make these changes over a few months then you can get away without reactivation, but you cant or not supposed to use OS on another PC
