Hello All,

I have a Peugeot 406 HPI 02 reg. Its a 2L. From time to time I will start the car up, go to pull away and lose all power. Turn it all off, and sometimes will be fine first time, or will have to restart the car 3 times. Any ideas, as Peugeot do not have the answer. It did come up with a intermittent fault.

I too have this problem. Although mine occurs only when the engine is at low revs (~1500rpm), under load and in 4th or 5th gear. The computer gave a similar intermittent fault with "turbo pressure fault".

Any tips welcome.

So one of you has a petrol, the other has a Diesel? But both with turbos's?

My immediate thoughts would be that either the wastegate is getting stuck open on the turbo, possibly more liely that the EGR valve is getting stuck open or that the turbo itself is damaged and is not spinning up like it should and giving you low boost.

If it's the turbo or the wastegate then if you rev up with the bonnet open you'll find that rubber boost hoses won't "breathe" as much as they should, ie they won't inflate very much, but you need to compare them when the turbo is working correctly to get some idea of whether that is the fault.

If it's the EGR valve, the engine will cough or hesitate when you rev up.

let me know what you find.

Thanks for the tip Ace.

The EGR valve was replaced on my diesel 2.0 Hdi less than 6 months ago (previous owner). I wonder if there is not a constant loss of power as the 406 does not like climbing hills as much as my former 1998 306 XRDT (1.9l)? Any comments from peugeot connoisseurs welcome on the relative power of the 306/406 welcome.

I found another string (http://forums.preloved.co.uk/fuseaction-foru....../22b77c08.html) with some good tips that I will follow up this week.

I have to agree with you that there seems so be some inconsistency with the power output of the various engines Peugeot have produced in the 1.9/2.0 Diesel range.

I had a 306 1.9D (no turbo) and although I appreciate the weight was slightly less than my current 406 1.9TD it had a lot more pulling power. The original 406 1.9HDi which alleges to have the same power rating as the 1.9TD (90hp) seems to have less power again. I guess it must all be in the torque, the 1.9D having the greatest perhaps?

As for the EGR valve, I found that the vacuum solenoids which control the opening of the valves are pretty unreliable. I have had to replace both the EGR and fast idle vacuum solenoids recently in my 406 so it's possible that your solenoid has become deffective too.

It is reassuring to hear that it is not just my poor judgement on the relative power of the 306 vs 406. I miss our old 1.9TD 306. It was far more of a driver's car than our 2.0Hdi 406 (sigh).

Exactly how tricky is it to access these solenoids? Is it simply a matter of removing the black plastic engine cover and looking at the back of the engine or do I need to remove some serious components (and or specialist training)?

On the phase I 406 TD (not HDi - although I imagine they are in a similar place) the solenoids are mounted on the bulk head/fire wall at the back of the engine. They aren't particularly difficult to access and you can test them by applying 12 volts to either of the terminals whilst holding the other at 0 volts and feeling/listening for a "relay tick." It's easiest to to if they are not in-situ, there's enough hose attached to them to manouvre them into a convenient position.
If they don't tick, the solenoid is probably jammed.

Alternatively you can just put your fingers around the EGR solenoid and rev the engine from idle and you should be able to feel the "tick" as the engine revs up where the solenoid is closing (it's usually open at idle). You can also put your finger into the opening at the top of the EGR to feel it opening and closing.

Another possibility for a faulty EGR valve is a split vacuum hose or poor hose fitting to the EGR valve.

Just an observation here but although we are talking about the EGR valve, didn't you say the dealer told you tht it is a turbo fault? Have you had a look/listen for leaky boost hoses etc when you rev up?

I have a Peugeot 406 HPI 2.0l 51reg. with absolutly the same problem
us your car. Peugeout dealer could not help just pump money from my
pocket. But problem still persist. The engine regulary within one or two weeks lose power and cut out. Dealer just replace fuel pumps and solenoids but problem appear again and again. Would you tell me please
did you fix your car and how?
Thank you very much.

Thanks for the details Ace.

I wish I written down the code, but I am pretty sure he said that it was a 'turbo pressure fault'. It was one of the intermittent one that resets the engine fault light on the dash when you turn the vehicle off and lock the doors for greater than 5 minutes.

The problem on my car is restricted to when I apply more throttle when the vehicle is at low (1500rpm) revs up hill. Turning the car off and starting again resets the 'limp mode (sub 2800rpm)'. Would the above detailed driving conditions generate the most pressure in the system and therefore be most likely to make the faulty component fail?

I wouldn't have thought that there would be much boost generated by the turbo at 1500 rpm, it certainly wouldn't be at full capacity.

Sounds like it would have something to do with the throttle position sensor and the boost meter on the fuel pump but that would only be guessing...........hope you find an answer eventually.

Hello all,

I have to fix my 406 HPI. However it did come up with throttle sensor, 1st cohesion. However spelt!!! How would you go about replacing the pedal n how much? Any one help please!!!! Also what i find is the revs never sit nice, when coasting down a hill or changing the gear sometimes the engine will idle at 2000 revs. Or when idle it will jumb from 700 revs to 1000 revs.

Hello all,
Well my HPI is still broken. The main dealer plugged it in, Throttle Pedal Sensor. Had that replaced at £105. However one day later jerks between 1500 2000 revs. Same as before. They have the car again, however if it is the same as before then it can't be throttle sensor!! I will keep you all posted...
