hi all,I am thinking about changing my freelander.
Looking at td4 2003 onwards.
I would like one of the last Mk 1s.
Cannot go to a 2 yet.
Any thing to watch for/ i.e. Changes from L series.
Which level is best buy?

Cheers rodders

Rodders....Hows it going...i havent heard from you for a while, finally decided to get rid of the L and get a Td4 ....hows the L been , many problems?

Just make sure you get a GOOD warranty Rodders , get the vehicle checked over before you buy ......im sure you will.

Engine reliabilty isnt really an issue with the Td4 although they do suffer from the odd problem. Injectors can be troublesome on higher mileage vehicles , we have changed a few turbos but not a great deal considering the amount we see . Low pressure fuel pumps are quite common along with the high fuel pressure senors which corrode out and give you all sorts of running and starting issues.

Youve owned the L series Freelander for ages so im pretty certain you know all about various transmission and water leak problems , window regs and all the other things that the haters of these vehicles will gladly tell you about in a flick of an eye.
I wouldnt go for anything younger than 2001 and if possible go for the newest you can afford......2003 onwards.

A nice model is the Sport version .... tbh not really that sporty but they look nice and handle pretty well , the vehicle is lower than other models by a few mm and have uprated suspension, inside the seats are firmer but the rest of the trim has stayed the same.... you would probably pick up a decent early Sport now for around £5000+ they were made until runout in 2006 ...so there should be a good price range .

Goodluck with whatever you decide....oh and stick to a manual.

hi dudkat, good to hear from you again.
not had many probs with the L series, nothing with the engine just usual relacement service parts.
still think this is one of the best low tech diesel engines, easy to repair etc.
brake pads normal wear and tear, still same discs.
starter packed up at 93000.
got a slight leak from rear half shaft seal, O/S but topped up box and so no further probs.
did consider changing seal but only weeping so i did not.
only changing cos of age, and i like the 2003 on model.

cheers rodders
let you know when have new one.
