Hi There & greetings to all. I was wondering if ANY of you good people out there could offer me any advice as to where I can obtain a second hand INDUSTRIAL sewing machine from some one who isnt in the market to rip me off!!! I have two members of my family who are currently serving their country out in Afghanistan (the sand pit... as it is known by our lads & lasses) The kit that they are presently issued with, as some of you may be aware is not the best, when they have come home on their well deserved mid deployment leave, I have had to watch them hunt around for saddler & cobbler shops who can repair their kit ( & rip them off, because they are forces) ranging from bergans to getting belts modified to adding extra pouches with heavy duty zips to carry med supplies to aid their injured oppoes ( my lads are both medics) I have decided enough is enough! & am looking into the possibility of mending & modifying the kit that both they & their oppoes have. Whilst we have bought new gear for them to use in theatre The prices are so high for what I feel I could do for them Look forward to any input any one feels able to offer.

hi have you looked on ebay? there are plenty on there. i sold my industrial sewing machine on ebay about 6 months ago and the lady who won it only paid me £50 that was the highest bid so she got a bargain. dont go for new machines or shops that are selling used mashines go for a private seller like i was and you will pay less. the machine i sold was not brilliant to look at but was a perfect sewer so dont be put off by the looks theese machines are true workhorses . good luck

Thanks for the intel bud. I am curently in tyne & wear, so I hink I am a little to far up country. However, still on the look out for an ally sweing machine. Our local shoe repair shop has a "trainee" working with him, so he has told me that if I get my lads to leave their bergans with him, to practice hard stitching on them, he will do a special armed forces rate of £10 per pack, putting webbing on the mole webbing to support the medic packs they have to carry in the sandpit. Thanks for taking time out for comms.

Thanks for that... My lads, have both said exacly the same thing. They have left me to get their medic packs sorted out & reinforced with webbing straps as they are now having to carry extra med supplies to treat their oppoes fragged (hurt) by I.E.D.s left by the "special delivery" service (taliban) I have been hand sewing some of their kit in a make do & mend way, however, as medics they are having to carry kit in exess of 55-60 lbs in addition to 7-10 day"nornal" patrol kit. If it wasnt for the fact thay are both used to carrying massive amounts of wt as paras, they would just not be able to cope. The coldstreem guards medics are finding it hard to cope. The yank medics are supplied with top end of the range kit, however, as the commanding officers do not get on with each other in Helmand, the old yank v brit thing!!! The yanks were told to rip the makers name off the battle packs. I would have invested in so called private kit for the role they have been tasked in doing. One of my lads is using an old gpo mail sack modified by the coldstreem guards he is atttached to, to carry his full med kit. Poor bugger has told me, he feels like a posti with a sack of letters to deliver. Good of you to think of & support our lads in uniform out there...thanks again.

You are doing a great job. I have an industrial overlocker but am in devon and can't afford not to sell it. It is a workhorse and would possibly do - lift the cutter out of the way for normal sewing but will be double stitched and reinforced if on an overlocker so maybe not what you want - not sure. Machine has been valued at £450 but I wouldn't want that much for this work you are doing. Let me know if any good to you. I reckon you should publish what you have written on here in papers!! It's a disgrace how the troops are supplied. If I don't hear from you well done and good luck.

Thank you so very much for your responce to my plight.(or rather the plight of my lads & their oppoes) As regards your suggestion of publishing, the thought has & did cross my mind. However, After chatting with one of my lads who is attached as a medic, he has advised me not to for the simple reson that any adverse publicity on this side of the pond will have the effect on having a so called knock on effect on our lads so called still in the thick of it. lads parants who have been vociferous in their condemnation of the "kit" issue that their boys are issued with have been told in no uncertain terms that they are to tell their parents to decist from all such activities. Put much plainer for the paras. My lads both have stripes on their arms as they have gained battlefield qualifications in trauma medicine, their thinking is one of if we are removed from theatre, we cannot resucitate our injured & hurt oppoes. The last thing I wish to do is to make a bad situation even worse for my lads & their brave , brave oppoes. For the time being at least I will continue patch up their kit ( & their oppoes kit) to a standard to which they are able to make it functional. As I said, in my last, The medics within the battlegroup are having to carry at least 10lbs extra kit in order to ensure that they can provide our front line lads with life saving treatments. I am considering buying american medic kit for them both as this is by far superior to anything our lads currently carry. despite all the crap the politicians spout off from the safety of the chamber. Once again, thanks for your kind thoughts I will pass them on to my lads next time I get time on a sat phone to them.
