I have a N reg Rover 416i and it's failed on the omissions with the MOT,the garage said I need a new Cat Converter,They have replaced that and it still failed on the omissions..

So they replaced it again, and it has still failed although the omissions have come down. The garage said it's not the machine as other cars before and after mine are passing.

They are at a loss to why this is happening, anyone with any idea's to the problem here please.
Everything else is passing with flying colours.

hi, welcome to the site

sorry to hear about your troubles, but out of interest, how much are they trying to charge you for the cat, it cant be worth it putting a cat on a 15 year old car, sorry to be so negative, but garages love spending other peoples money, but with the cost of the test, the cat, fault finding by fitting other things trying to eliminate the omissions failure

it could turn into an expensive nightmare

Hi, I am not sure what you are saying here. I don't mean to be rude in any way. There is the catalytic converter which is situated as part of the exhaust, it helps to burn some of the unburnt fuel & there is the lambda sensor that is connected to the electronics, it senses the value of the emmissions & the electronics (ecu) control how much fuel to inject. Is it the sensor or the exhaust part that has been replaced.
Can the garage read the fault codes from the ecu? If not then find another that can. The ecu monitors the sensors. If it does not get readings within an expected range it defaults to a 'get you home mode' this changes the ignition timing & fuel ratio to ensure you dont burn out any valves. It also gives you high emissions.
They may have read the fault codes & it keeps saying the sensor is faulty. Start the engine three times with a faulty sensor & you get the 'get you home' mode kick in! I have seen this & traced it to a crack in the sensor wire at its connector. They should have done a wiggle test from the sensor to the ecu connector. Trying to read this sensor with a waveform monitor will prove a problem if the cable is faulty.
So let us know exactly what they have done & ask them what is happening with the ecu codes & have they checked the continuity of the sensor cable. Also have they reset the ecu.
Another thought, how long do they leave the engine to warm up before doing the emmission test? If you have a slow temperature sensor then this will have the effect of holding the choke out. In the past my garage have taken the car for a run around the block in third gear to get the engine & exhaust almost red hot as the cat only works at operating temp.
My half penneth' hopes it helps.

i think you can run it without a cat with adjustments, but it wont be legal, i think all car's register after 1992 must have a cat fitted, i think there maybe one or two exceptions,
just be careful not to go overboard just to get an mot on it, no point in spending £300 on a car worth £400 ish, but if you see it as another years motoring for £300 and that could be cheaper than buying another car,

Thanks for all the messages on this topic, the car has finally passed it's MOT,the garage fitted 2 cat converters and they both didnt work,so they done a dynostics and found both cat converters were faulty,or the chemicals used in the cat's were at bare minimum so they were not enough to pass.Pass rate is 0.3 and those 2 cat's were at 0.9..

So the garage went and bought another one and paid an extra £20-00 for a better brand, and it worked fine. The garage did not charge me for replacing 2 of them and are claiming back labour time from the supplier.

Anyways now Im happy but thanks to all that suggested certain things,I will bare all in mind and Im learning to.

Cheers all.
