Hi there - been told the head gasket on my N Reg Rover 214 has gone - and that possibly this may have been a model that may have been recalled at some time in the past due to it being a common problem. Is this true - and if so, how do I go about finding out? If not, what kind of cost should I expect to incur? I am reluctant to try garages locally - wary of being ripped of as I am female. Also on very low budget! Any replies gratefully received!

Thank you.

hello, welcome to the site

the head gaskets going on the rover 200/400/25/45 range is very common, basically if you buy one of these and the head gasket has not been replaced in the past, and you need proof it been done, its more then likely that it will need doing at some point, if you dont know anyone who can do the head gasket as a favour, i guess youre looking at £450+ you have to ask yourself what is the car worth to you, does the car have any other faults that might need doing for the next mot, and howw long is it to the next mot, will it cost more to replace your car than fix it

im sure other's will chip in, but it might be better to cut your loses and get rid of it

Hi there Tommy - thanks for taking the time to reply to my message! I am hoping to be able to keep the car as I had to take out a loan to pay for it and it still has over 2 years left on it! It seems to be quite low mileage (69K) and has only had two owners and is in a really good clean condition. (Lets hope Im not deluding myself!!)

Any more tips gratefully received!

Sheila

A head gasket can be done from £250.00 Get three garages to quote & ask for a warranty of some discription. Your car is an early production model & these suffered less of a problem. You will need to address the reason for the failure. This may be a leak from the water pump or a faulty fan circuit as you don't want it to happen again. Ask the garages if they have done these before & there success rate.
You could check out the rovermg.org website & ask if there is anyone in your area that can be reccommended.
Let us know what you decide to do.
