Hiya i wonder if any1 can help me, i have a pug 405 estate which recently passed its mot (thankfully), and for the last month or so wich includes 2 weeks before the mot ive have this droning like noise from the front of the car which seems to change in pitch with speed , ive been advised that it cant be the wheel bearing as this would have showed up on the mot , they have said that it could be driveshaft rumble whatever that is? although they have also said it could be a differential prob , i`m not sure who or what to belive i hope someone can shed some light on this little problem, thanks in advance

wheel bearings, when not to bad are not always pulled up on mot. so it could be this. Jack car up and leave in gear with steering lock on and try wiggleing the wheel top to bottom see if theirs any play or not.it could be shaft, but dought it. next I go for thrust bearings. this will be noisey intime with the revs. Also at tick over in nuetral dipping the clucth would make it quiter. If in Nuetral and stationary with clutch down the noise goes its likly to be diff.

hiya thanks for your quick reply, i drove the car from work this morning and from what i can hear the noise changes pitch as speed gets faster ,i tried coasting in neutral as well and it seem like the noise is the same when driving in gear so am not sure whether this is a diff problem more like a wheel bearing but both mechanic say it isnt a bearing problem so i`m still a bit confuzzled, thanks again

It increases noise with speed and does it in Nutral. which should mean its not the diff or thrust bearings. and bearings eliminated. Coul it be a tyre issue swop the fronts wheels and tyres with the back ones or put the spare on the front right say then fit front left on right and spare on left. Check their no rotational tyres though if swopping lefts for right ect. See if that solves it.

hi mate i had a pug 405 and had the same noise and started to get lowder after a while and found it to be the wheel bearing.the only way to test was to jackthe front up and spin the wheel on both sides and checking how free they spin .If it stops quite quickly to the other one then that is your faulty wheel bearing.just make sure that your brake are not draging on the discs.wheel should spin freely.Hope this helps if not ask at garage for them to check it.It is a bit of a job to replace the bearing but can be done.
