First thing to do is join club80-90.co.uk There is a fantastic amount of help and advice on their website. I have had a couple, but could never afford a 'good' one, so never ended up keeping them for long. It's obvious I know but spend as much as you can afford because there are a lot of bad ones out there, and they are all very overpriced. I think the best ones are the turbo diesel Westfalias, if you can afford one and live with left hand drive.

LHD is no longer cheaper as the best T25s the 'Westfalia' are all LHD and lots of people prefer them for taking abroad. Buy the very best T25 you possibly can as a cheap one to 'do up' will cost you far far more in the end. Any rust issues will need to have been done to the highest standard or not at all, it costs more to undo someone elses bodges.
Engines are aircooled 79-83 and the 2.0 is the one to go for, the 1.6 is woeful. After that they were watercooled, these have a head bolt issue as the aircooled engine was literally boxed in a water jacket and the head bolts rust through causing cylinder head failures. Be sure they have been sorted! Ther are two diesels, one non-turbo - DON'T DO IT, your asthmatic Grandmother will overtake you in her bathchair. The TD (Turbo is fine). Some have afterarket Subaru engines which can be temperamental and cause you insurance issues.
So, buy best, but once..
If Steve at EASTFALIA (google him, can't recall in he's .com or .co.uk) has any in, his tend to be the pick of the bunch, at a price, but one worth paying.

I've just sold mine which was regarded as one of the best standard westfalias in the UK, take a look at our website -> (retype with http://www.) atasteofnorfolk.com and click on the 'VW Camper' button to see pics of how they should look. - but you'll see it wasn't the cheapest, but those 'in the know' inundated me with calls.

Its a preference thing. Watercooled have asn issue with the head bolts. The engine wasn't designed for the bolts to be immersed in corrosive water and can rust & fail. But once done they last a long time. Aircolled are more 'true' to the VW thing, but are old tech and less powerfull. Check aircooled exhaust systems very crefully, If the heaters don't work there may be issues with the heat exchangers and a full system could cost £400-£700 to replace.

If your budget will stretch to is, try to find a late Westfalia California or Atlantic with the last 2.1 wasserboxer engine. Steve at http://www.eastfalia.com used to be the best place but I think his source of good T25s is drying up hence the prices going up so much.
