It's time for my Astra to go and I want to get something bigger. For less than 700quid i can get an L reg Carlton or an R reg Vectra. Both of them are diesel estates. Common sense says that the newer car will be more economical etc etc etc but the Carlton is BIGGER!!! I've had the Astra for four years and its never let me down. before that I had a Volvo 740 estate. Huge. Completely reliable but very thirsty.
Is a Carlton going to give me the big trouble free ride I want or do I go for the economy size?

check out the insurance groups before you buy, also check out when both last had a cambelt change, if they have cam belts, the vectra sounds cheap, has it done loads of miles, and the carlton sounds expensive lol,

Cheers.
The Vectra is 2.0lt and the Carlton is a 2.3lt, insurance isn't really a problem, there's only 40 notes in it on third party fire & theft.

What about servicing though. Would either of them need plugging in to a diagnostic machine or could my mate down the road still look after it for me?

sorry about the wait. I'm just getting used to this emailing lark.
I tried to send something just now but it disapeared on me.
2nd go!

Question; If Carrltons rust where do I look? Boot seams wheel arches etc, etc.
Also there are only 5 for sale at the moment on Auto trader. Where are all the rest? Didn't they sell? My dad had one years ago and, although I didn't drive it, it seemed like a comfortable ride.

carltons ..where are they now ?..........they are an old car long out of production , also you have heard the magic word mentioned RUST !. If you want a large carlton type car look out for OMEGAS, lots around for under a grand but be mindful of suspention problems. They are heavy on fuel as well , my first 2lt petrol did around 27 mpg around town but close to 40 out on the open road. My current 2.2 Tdi does on average 37 around town and approx 50 on the open road so a diesel would be more economical

time has moved on a bit since i asked the question and sorry again for the legth of time it takes me to reply. I am now the proud owner of an Omega Tourer (R reg). loads of car for the money. Very pleased with it although there are small rust spots on one of the back doors and around the rear wiper arm. It was advertised as "looks and drives like new". It isn't either of those things, but for 850 quid with 5 months tax & MOT well worth the price.
I drove up to Liverpool in the old Astra last weekend and it was the final straw. Drafty, noisy uncomfortable journey (we live in Plymouth).
9 sets of roadworks and no radio. Or heater.
Anyway, I've done the deed. I don't do many miles to from work so the MPG shouldn't hurt me too much. Insurance comes in at under 200 pounds ( its not worth having fully comp at this level). There is some investigation to do on it. It pulls to the left when braking hard and I'm sure I'll find other things wrong with it as I go. I'll attach a photo as soon as I can.

have your tracking checked out for the" pulling to the left when braking" issue. Also check tyre pressures and that all tyres are in fact the same and correct size.

I have a reciept for 2 tyres, valves, wheel balancing and tracking which is dated 28/10/09 . The previous owner paid £189 for that but didn't replace the faulty HT leads (strange!). just done that and it's nice and smooth now. On the 'Health Check Report' which came attached to the tyre receipt it has written in long hand "play in stearing ####### and place in stearing arms very bad under braking pulls to left and stearing wheel to the right". or at least I think thats what it says. very hard to make out. I think the best (easiest) thing to do is take it back to where this was done and have a word.
Thanks for the advice though
