give this a try

Note

Before entering the remote transmitter programming mode, make sure that the vehicle battery is fully charged and that the anti-theft system is not armed or triggered (if equipped).

Close all doors to make sure conflicting chimes do not sound during programming.

Turn the ignition switch from position I to position II four times within six seconds.

Turn the ignition switch to position 0.

A chime sounds and an LED will illuminate to indicate that the learning mode has been accessed and it is possible to program remote transmitters.

Within 10 seconds of the previous step, press any button on the remote transmitter being programmed until a chime is heard and the LED flashes. This indicates a new transmitter code has been successfully received.
The system will exit the learning mode if the ignition switch is turned to position III,

Note: An incorrect programming procedure does not affect the stored codes.

After successful programming, only the new programmed remote transmitter will be accepted.

10. Test the programmed remote transmitter, by activating and deactivating the remote locking and unlocking functions.

I know that if the battery in the remote key fob is left out for more than 30 seconds it loses its memory and needs to be reprogrammed using the ford diagnostic tool IDS.

As fasty said earlier that will sync the remote key fob with the central locking and allow the the key to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote.

But won't work if the remote key fob buttons are soft as it would then need a new remote.

Hope this helps

I`m sure I also had to use the Red "Master" Key as well as the normal black key when programming my Mondeo .

I also had to reset the Central Locking by removing the fuse (or battery connection) for 10 minutes.

(Make sure you have the radio code )

Here is a useful website for Ford keys that might provide some help
