I have a 94 astra 1.4 with a bosch alternator. I noticed today that the top mounting arm of the alternator has a bolt hanging out where it bolts onto the engine. Theres not much room and I cant seem to get a socket on it without removing the guard. The alternator seems firm so I'm wondering if its absolutely necessary. If so any tips on getting it back in without removing the guard. I need to push the bolt in while turning. Have been trying all afternoon with pliers and a spanner.

I guess you mean the bracket is has a bolt either end, one on the alternator the other which goes in to the block or head. Take off the bolt where it is attached to the alternator then try fitting the bolt to the bracket which is a pain in the arse to do then try fitting the bolt which is easy to do if you get what i meanNige

I managed to do what you suggested however the belt had pulled the alternator inward so that I couldn't get the bolt back in at the alternator side. I would have to get underneath to loosen the other bolts and I have replaced belts before but Ive got a back problem at the moment so I think Ill get the local mechanic to put a new belt on as this ones showing signs of wear.

I decided not to renew the belt but I got the bolt back in the alternator mount by applying clockwise force to the self adjuster wheel nut which is 15mm. This releases the tension on the belt. It was then easy to push the alternator hole into alignment to fit the bolt . I would have renewed the belt but they have ran it through the engine mount which means getting to those rusty bolts and jacking up the engine. If the belt breaks Ill get a mechanic to do it. Thanks for your help.
