Hi yes i have a 1998 ford escort and for the last week it has been sounding very rough on starting, however once it is running it runs fine. However when i have gone to start it today has taken three attempts, and when i do start the car there is a popping noise coming from the aircon. Could any1 give some advice on what this could be, could it be the battery(if so how can i test the battery?cold weather?) or could it be the starter motor?

yep sure its a 1.4 escort with 100,000 miles on the clock and its last service was this time last year,I dont travel many miles, I use it to travel to work but its only a short journey though. Also i went to kwik fit yesterday and they said that the battery was unserviceble so i got a new 1 fitted sounded ok when i started the car, but earlier tonight when i finished work i started the engine but it was lifeless then i started it again and it began to run but only just barely the engine sounded rough. Could it possibly be the cold weather?

higlad you got a new battery, we now know that you have a good electrical supply. your symptoms do sound like the car could do with a service plugs points filters etc as lots of short trips can be worse then fewer longer journeys. However before you do anything, can you try the following: In the dark with the engine running, open the bonnet and look at where the plug leads are and see if there is any tracking (small electrical spaks) jumping from the leads to oneanother or the engine block. you will have to try this where there are no street lights etc to see this best. If you see any signs of tracking the leads will need replacing. let us know how you get on Al

iv tried that but there were no sparks that I could see, I have taken it to a local garage because i was starting to worry about the problem and they have said that it's the starter motor that has gone they said that i need to replace it this is going to cost £120 to sort out.

Well maybe what is happening, when the starter gear throws out to spin the flywheel ring gear to start the vehicle, the starter gear is not returning, probably stuck, tell them you want to see the starter motor and if the teeth on the gear are worn, then should be ok.
